I installed my Isspro EGT gauge last night, placing the thermocouple after the turbo. When I first got the gauge, it was reading 50-100 degrees, which concerned me, but I decided I'd deal with it. As soon as I hooked the gauge up to the thermocouple, it read 550 degrees and never moves from there, even when you completely disconnect all the wires to the gauge.

All my connections are tight, so I've ruled that out. Do you all think it is a faulty gauge? The lead wire is fine too, no kinks or exposed wires.

The only odd thing I've seen is that when I go around a turn, the needle will move with the centrifugal force.

What do you guys think?

Does it go to zero or the outside temperature when you turn the key on without starting,if it does you have no problem.

illflem-
the way it is wired, it is always on. The gauge always reads 550 wether it has power, (which it always does), or when I completely disconnect all wires running to it.

Make sure the two wires are not turned around, wrong lead to wrong lead. Did you take the jumper wire out from between the posts on the back of the gauge. If memory serves me there is no power wire, the only power wire is for the light. Hope this helps. Regards, Ron

Great point ronsram - there was a jumper on the two terminals on my EGT gauge when I received it now that I think of it! That could very well be the problem. I doubt the terminals are reversed as the needle would be pegging on the low side if that was that case.

My gauge didn't have anything that ran between the two posts when it came out of the box. I just checked it again and I didn't see any type of wire back there, just two posts and a hole for a light.

I disconnected the power wire now, so all that is left if the lead wire to the pyrometer. If the gauge doesn't have any power running to it though, how can it measure anything through the leadwire?

Mark, the thermocouple(sender) actually makes a small amount of electricity which varies with the temperature. The gauge is nothing more than a very sensitive voltmeter. They are usually shipped with a wire between the sender terminals to protect the gauge from static electricity causing damage,if it's left in the gauge shouldn't work at all, would probably read zero. The Banks people told me that the gauge is the problem 95% of the time, but in your case since it's new I'd send the whole thing back. Might want to pick up a 1/4 or 1/8 pipe plug for the hole you tapped in the exhaust before removing the sender. I can tell you from experience that it doesn't sound good with an open hole in that location.

if you have a lead running to power that might be your problem the only leads that connect to the gauge is the two from the thermocoupler and make sure there not touching each other where they splice together under the hood, they have to be insulated with a rubber boot or tape. The only lead going to power should be for the light and ground for the light. Regards, Ron

My EGT gauge doesn't need a 12v supply either - only 12v running to it is for the light. I'd check out your wiring and make sure it's right - is there a seperate terminal marked 12v or did you run 12v to one of the thermocouple terminals?

My thermocouple has two wires which both go to the gauge, if you only have one wire from the thermocouple you will have to ground the other terminal on the gauge. Should be grounded as close to the thermocouple as possible. bg

I ran a 12 V to the gauge, but realized what a BONEHEAD mistake that was when I attached the fuse in the circuit and the thing started throwing sparks.

It didn't fry the gauge though as it was @ 550 before I did this little disaster.

when you got your gauge there should have been a wire between the two terminal posts on the back, it's there to keep the needle from jumping around dureing shipment, if it was not there when it arrived then your gauge is probably damaged from vibration dureing shipment. As a side note the needle will move back and forth if the wire is removed when you move the gauge side to side. Hope this helps. If none of the above threads from everyone helps you more then likely have a defective gauge. Regards, Ron

I believe it is the gauge Ron. I know it didn't come with a wire when I took it out of the box so I think it was damaged in shipping. I still wonder why it reads 550 all the time now when it came out of the box reading 100-200.

Luckily I bought it from DIS b/c I know they will take care of the problem unlike other vendors I 've worked with who didn't do anything for me.

More power to DIS!

The 550 reading could be from hooking live juice to the wrong terminal and causeing some internal damage to the gauge. Ron

I thought the juice might have fried it too, but there was no change in the gauge before/after the event.

Mark,
When I installed my Isspro I inadvertently hooked up the lead wires at the sending unit backwards but I don,t recall what it read. Switched them and it works fine now. By the way I got the oil temp gauge fixed.

What was wrong with your oil temp? I still can't figure mine out so I"m going to spend $35 from DIS and get a new one. I'll probably save the old sending unit to use on my Mag-Hytec.
