I promised him I wouldn't say anything but it is something I can't keep to myself anymore. Besides, GREAT LESSON for all Newbies and their first diesels.
This guy I have known for many years truly is an intelligent guy with a very good head for mechanics (though not a mechanic)but a bit ignorant of the Turbo Diesel. He had been buggin' me about info on performance mods because his 2001 ETH DEE had smooth power but not the kick in the butt he expected from an H. O. engine and certainly not like the only other truck he had ridden in and it was equipped with a Box/boost mod. and 4" exhaust. He always said he wished his turbo had that "Big Rig" whistle and he even took his silencer ring out to get a little more. He said it sounded kinda "wooshie" and you could hear the whistle but not alot. "The curse of the little unmodified Cummins" he thought. He *****ed because a PSD smoked him in Colorado, and chalked it up to a unknown power mod on the Stroker. Fuel mileage was 17mpg at 75-78MPH with the A/C on. Pretty average for our trucks. Get this! He takes it in to have an unrelated problem checked out (steering and LSD), the mechanic takes it out for a test drive, comes back and tells him that this is the "Biggest Pig" he has ever driven. There isn't any boost! He then tells him that he probably has a boot off.
I know my buddy re tightens the clamps with every oil change but never noticed the boot wasn't in the clamp "because the one small part of the boot that was off, was hidden by the truck frame and you couldn't see it!" What an IDIOT. I said, "you have driven this truck for 23,000 miles with a one inch gap in the turbo boot and didn't notice?!?! #ad
HELLO, McFLY, ANY ONE HOME???sheesh! #ad
He tells me the only Turbo diesel he has driven were old beatup Ford L8000 dump trucks and an Isuzu NPR, and that was 8 years ago. I said what about the one you test drove??? He said that it was a 2000 and never had a place to get on it and his truck didn't come in for a few months later and really couldn't rember the test drive. His 2001 ETH DEE was the first St. Louis truck off the assembly line so he still had nothing to compare it to.
Oh well, I guess under the circumstances, you really don't know what you really don't know, right? So, let this be a lesson to all you newbies! #ad
Check your turbo hoses and clamps with your fingers not just your eyes.
Oh, he has boost now! #ad
That Turbo Whistle thing? Yea, you got it, says it sounds like a mid-size Peterbuilt. The only "Woosh" sound now is the sound he makes with his mouth when he describes how much faster his truck takes off when the turbo charger is actually being used! #ad

Ok, I won't be able to sleep tonight if I don't tell you who it was. . . It was me #ad
Man that hurt. . . I need to go see my therapist now.

I feel for you. Let this be a lesson to everyone out there. This is also another reason to get a boost gauge. Think how fast you would have caught it if you could have seen a number. Enjoy your new truck.

What is even worse than no boost is that he has been sucking in unfiltered air for 23k miles, the wear on the engine is probably more like 230k.

GREAT STORY! Tears ran when I read punch line. Took alot of guts to tell that one. Amazing how we learn things everyday.

With the turbo still turning there is positive pressure in the intake manifold, it was blowing out the boot not sucking. (ref: Monica)

Even a sad story has a happy ending as a learning experience. Now watch that fuel mileage plumment now that he will be drag racing at every stop lite and rolling starts with PSD's and D'Maxes.

Absolutely great story... it's not April 1st yet is it? #ad

I've kind of wondered how a CTD would perform without the turbo. Now I guess I know?

JNutter,I agree with what you said, if there is just a leak boost will escape, nothing enters, but a one inch gap is a different story...

Well at least you had the ba*#s to say it was you that was a funny story. for the future use a 5/16" nut driver. lol lol being new like me i guess most people will forgive you thank god

All kidding around aside, I doubt I would admit to that, but it is a good object lesson in preventive maintenance. Thanks for sharing it with us.

THIS, gentlemen is what this forum is all about!!!! We all seem to learn either from ourselves or the action of others!! Great story to tell!!!!!!!!! Pete

Thanks guys for consoling my embarrasment #ad
I really hated the thought that this could happen to someone else, though, somehow I doubt it. I guess when your vehicle comes in from the factory, and someone drove it out the door, and they do a predelivery inspection at the dealer (not the one I just went to)and test drove it, it is kinda' hard not to believe your truck is running the way it is supposed too! #ad
It even has that quality assurance sticker from St. Louis (which I will now remove) did someone in the know not notice in the eight miles they drove it that it wasn't getting any boost?
You know, that Cummins is still a pretty strong motor, even at 12,000' with out a turbo. Climbed up through Slumgullion Pass in Colorado very well! #ad
