I have had my HX35W rebuild kit in my toolbox for some time now and today I finally got up courage enough to dig in. I posted a while back about the turbine side of my turbo leaking oil. It was not hard to work on at all. I marked the compressor wheel, shaft and nut for orientation before disassembly so as to get the balance the same as it was and so I would know how tight to reinstall the nut since I don't have specs. The sealing rings were worn so I'm hoping this solves the problem, so far so good. I got it up to about 34 PSI and it didn't explode so that's a good sign. The truck has 97k+ on it now.

Here are some pictures of the job, enjoy.

What did the kit cost and where did you get it? Down about 6 PSI here and some vertical play in the shaft noticed. Not hitting the housing, but not far from it either.

I paid $68 from High Tech Turbo in Salt Lake City, Utah (801-268-9721). Some vertical shaft play is normal as long as it doesn't hit the housing. All the turbos I have felt had some. I couldn't find any difference between the old and new bushings. Everything looked great in mine except for those little shaft sealing rings that were worn some on one side.

Thanks for the pics.

I'm on about a level 1 (removed the silencer ring to help reduce "barking") on a scale of 1-10 when it somes to turbos.

Thanks for the photos of your turbo guts. These are the first pics I've seen of the inside of these sweet sounding little gizmos.

Did your rebuild kit have good instructions?

Any tips on where to look on the web for turbo basics?

Seriously, I don't even know where the "compressor" is and which part is the "housing" that is spoken of so commonly.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Note: I've read the info on LarryB's home page - good stuff, but I'm wanting something with exploded diagrams... ?

Thanks Guys,

I'll check these places out.

In addition, I'll stop by our local trade tech and see what text books or tech manuals they use for their diesel mechanics courses.
