Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) NV4500 question

I have a 95 model that has suddenly lost power. I have checked the usual things ,like the fuel and air filter and replaced them. That did'nt help. I checked the hose out of the turbo to see if any oil was in there and I used two fingers and checked the turbo bearing , both seemed to be good. It starts the same as usual, so I don't think that the pump timing has moved. The truck doesn't have any guages on it or I would check the boost, but going by the visual on the turbo I think the boost is ok. When I rev it in neutral the engine stumbles on the top end and sort of skips or misses. Does these engines have a transfer pump? Could it be bad and causing the symtoms? Is there any other filter in the Bosch pump that could be partially plugged? Any ides will be appreciated!!!!!:(

Yes these engines have a transfer pump but they are pretty trouble free. Are there any engine mods at all? tell us about the truck or better yet do a signature so we can see what the truck has done to it. Check intercooler hoses and connections for tight. Look at the rubber connector hose to the cooler that is down at frame level at the cooler as the fender panel has sharp edge there and sometimes rubs a hole in the hose. Next step is check the waste gate for proper function and the 1/8"line that goes to the AFC housing, make sure it hasnt burnt or rubbed through.

I have had hoses on the intercooler bust loose because of the hose clamps comming loose. this has happend twice in 141,000 miles. Both times I was towing heavy and going up long steep grade. Both times heard a loud whoosh sound and power went away and boost went to zero and egt went high. Both times it was the clamp on the passenger side where it entered in to the after cooler (radiator area) down low. The rubber hose is big on one end and smaller on the other end. If you have to replace this hose it is very expensive ( over one hundred dollars from Cummins or Dodge) Most of the time it is only a loose clamp. Check all of your clamps on all of the hoses that come from the turbo to the intake manifold. I think they are all 10 millimeter socket.

Good luck and let us know what the problem is so we can all learn from you experience.

If ya have a lot of black smoke and feels really doggy. Then youve probably lost boost pressure. Check hoses and retighten clamps.

If you have the cat still on. That will bind things up pretty good. If its plugged it sorta acts like an exhaust brake.
