Hello all,

there's a couple of threads going right now regarding the wiring harness fro mSummit and the hot light switch.

Last night I replaced the light switch and connector and it works fine, but I also tried installing the Summit harness, but was wondering where the blue plug goes (the one that connects the harness to the in-cab light switch)?

blue plug on head light wiring harness ... where's it go?

Do yo uhave to splice the 3 wires into the current wiring?

If so -> where?

Or is it plug and play and was I not able to find the connector last night in the dark?

I have searched the forums, but couldn't find the answer, so any and all info is welcome (pix preferred :-laf ) :)

The harness is plug and play. Blue plug goes into either one of the existing headlight plugs. This connection is used to control the relays operation when you run the headlights.

Carl is right... all you have to do is plug in the connectors, and mount the relays, and run red wire to relays. The only thing I had to do on my '96 was extend the harness to reach the p/s headlight. No matter which way I ran the harness it wouldn't reach. Then I was confused by the "black box" on the diagram, but every plug had a connector to go to. I just went out and looked for the blue wire, but I stuffed everything under the d/s battery, and no matter how I held the flashlight and mirror I couldn't see where it went! If you are still having trouble tell us again, and I will lift up my battery and see where it goes. p. s. it was easier for me to take the batteries and the battery boxes out to reach everything--also was able to put some Rustoleum on the battery acid scars.

thanks a bunch guys for the heads up ... guess it makes sense now :-laf

And I already had the batteries and trays out last night, but it was getting dark and I had the light switch installed, so at least I had lights again ;)

I'll install the harness tomorrow :)

I ran the harness over the top of the radiator with the relays bolted down with one of the radiator shield screws under the pass. side batt. Had JUST enough wire to make it. Tied off summit wire to existing run at top of radiator. Don't forget to use dielectric grease on assembly. I removed locking tabs for light plugs to make it easier to service and no problems with them coming off.

Carl, what is the locking plug? Is it the ring that goes over the headlight assy and the wire and bulb goes inside it? I know it is a hassle replacing a bulb when it is so close to the batterires.

Also thanks for the heads up about dielectric grease.

thanks,

david

sort of related and since this is the newest thread about the switch i will ask here:

are those of us that are having problems with this switch ones who have installed (plug/splice aftermarket) towing lighting harness'? the reason i ask is i believe the factory towing option includes a relay which is supposed to relieve some of the load. are there problems with the switches with the factory tow packages?

is it a problem with all rigs?

also would LEDs on the trailer relieve most of the elec. draw?

Hello Tim,

just installed the harness today and it's a tight fit (running it over the radiator), but the install was pretty straight forward and like people indicated already -> the lights are brighter now (even the driverside which needs to be replaced due to water/fog inside the lens ... new headlight should be coming in this coming week :)).

Even if it's not (as) much needed ... it's still worth the 25 bucks and about 1 hour of your time :)

the switch 'burning up' already happens with just the lights on the Dodge itself (not necessarily trailer related) ... and what I understood from other posts, by dimming the interior light :)

i may order one here in a day or two when i am off again. i didnt want to unless i needed it.

btw: my headlights and factory fogs seem to be in great shape working or otherwise. i havent noticed heat coming off the switch. i will check it more closely on the way to work in the a. m.

The problem with the light switches is that Chrysler made them JUST heavy enough to work new. Very little tolerance for heat buildup and as a result many go up in smoke. The light dimmer rheostat (resistor) generates a LOT of heat when the interiors are dim, plus the wimpiness of construction of the rest of the assembly. The Summit kit takes the headlight load off the switch and reduces temps plus it gives a full voltage feed to the headlights. You might also want to open a small hole in the AC duct just under the switch to increase air flow in this area to remove some of the dimmer heat.

Hello Tim,

since it's cheaper to install the harness than to replace the switch + connector and it also give you brighter lights, it's well worth it :)

Of course I found out about it a little too late :-laf

I got mine tonight, and had it installed in 20 minutes... . noticeably brighter lights.

And since it is on clearance, you better order soon, as they may run out.

I didn't like the fact tho, that the wires from their harness that go to the + battery terminal are black not red at the battery, but are red from the connector to the relays.

ordered mine tonight. hopefully the gauges and summit harness show up within the next few days so i can install them when my tour is over this week.

i dont know if it was a long enough ride to work this morning and the way home (45 mins. each way) but mine didnt get hot on dim. it was warm but nothing that seemed meltdownish.

it doesn't have to happen ... it's just a matter of time (seemingly, since I didn't have problems till 2 weeks ago with 225k miles on the clock).

So it's one of those preventive things I guess ... if you know about it in time :-laf

thats what i figured :D did you have to lengthen the harness a bit ron?

vic, where did you see the quantity at? i went back and looked but couldnt find it. im guessing i made it in time since they took my money :-laf
