Suspect fan clutch ? Belt Squeaks loud now only in gear, idles quiet in park

Went to spread salt last night and right off the bat the belt squeaked ,cheep-cheep-cheep-cheep even before it was warm. Got back home and noticed when I threw it up in park it was quiet ,then put in drive or reverse or neutral it squeakes . The humm has been for some time when you back off it would ,well it sounds like the fan on the road when its kicked in but not all the way kicked in. Weve put a new tensioner, power steering pump, water pump, and now turbo, all within a month. But it squeaks in gear then quiets in neutral after its warm. Goerend trans installed a year ago shifts perfect, but why would there be a load on the serpintine when putting in gear? I ordered a fan clutch yesterday to be in today. Fan spins freely with belt off but won`t spin with belt on. And doesnt seem to kick on all the way when it gets warm or fairly hot plowing snow like it did before you could hear it rushing ,now its more of a vibratory hummm.

If the fan won't spin with the belt on you have your answer. The fan clutch is locked up. At any time, warm or cold, you should be able to grab the fan and spin it (engine off of course). The clutch never locks solid. Its about 50% efficent with no power and around 90% efficient with power, IIRC.

Fans not locked up solid just gummy and hard to turn while on the belt. What I`m freaking out over is it gets quiet in park but when going to neutral ,drive or reverse it squeaks after he`s plenty warm. I know the transmission fluid pumps in nuetral... . but not in park.

Power steering pump is under load in gear. If the fan clutch is too tight and the pump is loaded that is likely the issue.

Thanks cerberusiam! I was hoping there was an explanation . I`m using neighbors shed today so I have to gather tools . I know its a stretch and whatnot but what ImIgonna need ? 12mm gear wrench,15mm for shroud bolts ,I do have the rental tools for the fan clutch.

10 mm socket and extension to remove the upper left and lower shorud mount so you can get the shroud out with breaking things.

If you have the fan wrench you have the biggest piece. The rest, a good 3/8 mm set will do for. A set of mm wrenches is nice but not needed.

While you have the fan off spin the fan mount pulley and listen for noise and feel for roughness. Check the alternator, ps pump, and AC compressor the same way tomake sure you don't have another problem developing.

All done although still have whine noise which we are convinced is the injector pump. Using a long screwdriver ,tilting the ear down to it it sure seems to be the whine spot. So neighbor thinks some bypass valve in the pump has cashed in or whatever. Next will be to find out if it can be rebuilt at home or dropped off at Cummins..... not too serious hopefully. Gotta be done neverthe less, unless they last quite a while on their way out.
