Does anyone have an explanation for the swirl valves in the intake manifold? I watched a video about cleaning them as they build up with soot and seize.

Yep, you need to foam the Intake Once every 25K Miles to keep it clean (Remove Map sensor and Diffuser tube and clean manually) ,Mighty and Ams throttle Foam are the only products that work the best , Have WITech to engage Aggressive de-soot to clean the SCR/DPF system and change the oil. You can clean the SCR/DPF by driving at HWY speeds for 15+ miles, but WItech works the best.
The swirl valve and the distribution flaps get sooted up and need to be cleaned , I've done My ED 3 times in its 38K mile life , Yep its easy for Me and takes about 30 Minutes ,AFTER YOU REMOVE ALL THAT WORTHLESS SOUND FOAM AND BAG THE FOAM OR THROW AWAY. ITS A FIRE HAZARD, PLUS IT KILLS ALL THE PARTS IT Smother to death , I also removed the CP4 sound cover for the same reasons.

The AMS Throttle Cleaner I think is for a gas engine, is that fine for diesel?, how long after you clean it do you wait befor running the engine, and how many cans do you use, one or more?

I start it right away, 2-4 times, Remember I have WITECH so I don't need to drive it after foaming that 2-4 times. You don't need to drive for long either just take it to HWY Speeds and build some Boost, and the final drive If you have device to indicate that its in Active regen Drive until complete... Than Change the oil. I use 2-3 Cans.. If you want the skimmy on some short cuts you have to call Me.

I'm not familiar with the product, but if it is hydrocarbon based be careful when you start it or it could hydrolock or run away depending on how much you load into the intake.
