I have used that oil for over 195,000 miles .

and she still doesn't use hardly any in a 7000 mile change. I now have 247,000 on her. I didn't change from dyno 15-40 till I was almost at 50,000 - as that was what was recommended at the time --- and it doesn't take 5 hours to get a good read - 15 min will do what you want.....

I am not new to the site, but I don't spend much time in the forums... I have a question for ya'll, and I'm not trying to be rude or anything. Why are ya'll putting synthetic oil in a cummins diesel engine? I have NEVER heard of anyone doing that. EVER. And I have almost a dozen of them myself.

RTFoster,

Regarding your comment suggesting that Rotella is "garbage oil", years ago, in the TDR, a gentleman wrote about his early second gen. Dodge that had 1,153,000(that's million) miles, on it.

He towed trailers, for a living & documented everything he had done to the truck. He ran Rotella 15X40 with 5000 mile oil change intervals, the entire time. The engine had never been taken apart. It was still running but, he had bought 2 new Dodges (one for himself & the other for his wife, so that they both could tow). He kept the old, high-mileage Dodge & used it as a back-up in the event that one of the new trucks was down.

It seems to me that 1,153,000 miles on an engine using Rotella, only, is testament that Rotella may be a bit more than "garbage".

Generally, synthetic automotive engine oils are made up of Polyalfaolefins, diesters, and/or polyesters. These base stocks can give the oil very specific, desirable characteristics and will eliminate undesirables such as volatility and coking tendency.

High quality Synthetic Motor Oils do not "burn-off or vaporize" like conventional petroleum motor oils. Some synthetics will not burn until over 400 deg. F. High quality synthetics retain their viscosity, providing reduced oil consumption, improved fuel economy and better wear protection, all of witch contribute to the performance of the engine.

Most "true" Synthetic Oils will remain fluid in cold temperatures. For example:

The Amsoil 10W-40 Heavy Duty Diesel oil has a “pour point” of –45 Deg. Below Zero. The 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel oil has “pour point” of –60 Deg. Below Zero.

This provides quicker lubrication in cold climates which reduces wear on start-up.

I had the same thing happen to me

I don't know why, but when I switched to synthetic in my Toyota Tundra (6 cyl, gas of course) I used oil for the first few thousand miles. I used about 3 quarts total before the next oil change interval (7500 miles). The next oil change interval I used about 1/2 quart. After that, not a drop.

I traded the (2 year old) truck in at 95k miles for my Dodge.

Well I talked with Cummins Northwest before I put Mobil 1 synthetic in my 04', they told me NOT to put any in until I had 25,000 miles on the engine. As they told me the rings have not fully seated until then.

Hi Timsmith3, I noticed you have an "Extreme Coating Bed Liner. " What product is that and how does it compare to others like "Line-X?"

Hi,

Well I jumped the Gun on that, I haven't done it yet. But if your not in Oregon, don't look for it.

I'm going to get Line X myself, I have a dealer close who does it. I think the Extreme is better and holds up better. It goes on Hot and dries within minutes. And it's thicker then the others. But it's also 120 miles from me now, and Line X is 20.
