synthetic oil suggestions

Based on todays prices, I figure it would cost me $775. 00 to run 100,000 miles your way ... ... ... ..... and $385. 00 to run 100,000 miles my way.



I run Rotella and do a sample every 2-3 changes. I run ~15,000 miles per oil change. A 4,000 mile oil change interval is throwing money down the drain.

I've got 300,000 towing miles with nothing more than the recommended valve adjustment at 100,000 ... ... ... ..... and good oil analysis.

Actually there are a lot of NASCAR cars that are using Amsoil. You just don't see it! BIG money pays to advertise on the NASCAR cars, and Amsoil is NOT BIG money!

I went to a seminar a couple of years ago, and Bobby Unser was there and spoke of how many drivers actually ran the Amsoil in their cars. You would NOT BELEIVE the amount of cars that were running it.



Amsoil is a Sponsor of MANY race teams. (CORR) "Championship Off Road Racing" is one of the recent race events. You can see these races on NBC April 28, May 27, July 29, Sept 23, Oct 14, Oct 28, and Dec 8th.

They also have just secured a deal with the AMA outdoor Nationals, for the next three years. Amsoil will become the "Official Oil " of the AMA Outdoor Nationals, excluding all other oil Companies from advertising with the top series in Motorcross racing.



They have also sponsored racers in Motorcyle events, Snowmobile events, as well as Off-Shore Boat racing. Terry rinker has won multiple championships, and now Bob Teague is now going to be sponsored by Amsoil in the "cats Lites class of Off-shore Super Series races this year.



So YES, Amsoil is in Racing! Check out their Race page on their website, you'll be amazed at how many race teams use Amsoil.

The text quoted below is straight from Cummins on lubricants. As you can see they see no significant difference in engine efficiency at opertaing temperature with synthetics. The real advantage of sythetics is in the drive train components, i. e. diff's, transmission, and xfer case.

Lubricants

While the efficiency of drivetrain components is largely fixed by design, gross efficiency losses can be minimized through proper selection of lubricants. Synthetic base lubricants are manufactured in the laboratory to exhibit superior high temperature stability and low temperature fluidity. Since these fluids are created to exhibit less thickening at low temperatures, pumping losses are reduced and substantial reductions in spin losses can be realized at low operating temperatures. Test results indicate no significant difference in engine efficiency between synthetic and mineral base lube oils at normal operating temperatures. Since the synthetics are more expensive and, in an engine crankcase, are subject to the same contaminants as mineral based oils, they may not be cost effective. All oils thicken at low temperature, causing increased fuel consumption. The synthetic oil is less affected by temperature. This makes synthetic oils more fuel efficient at lower ambient temperatures.



The high temperature stability and low temperature fluidity of synthetic lubricants make them ideally suited for drivetrain components. In this environment the lubricant is not subjected to combustion byproducts. This means the lubricant, with its higher oxidation resistance can last substantially longer.

I just purchased my first order ever of Amsoil to change out all the fluids in my, new to me, '95. I bought it on-line and paid the preferred customer charge to get the better prices. The amount of marketing materials they sent was incredible but what really made them loose respect and credibility from me was the brochures for supplements! SUPPLEMENTS???? Jeez, I better warn my local vitamin store.



Oh, maybe a stupid question. How come all the oils companies say XXXmiles or every year? If I don't put that many miles on it why do I have to change it in a year? Especially these "superior" synthetics?

To answer your question with regards to "TIME" on the oil, its because when a vehicle is driven short distances, they do not get to operating temperatures for sustained periods, and condensation will form in the engine.

This causes the oil to deteriorate much faster than if the vehicle is driven for longer trips and more miles, as the moisture in the engine doesn't evaporate.



Even the vehicle manufactures give you limits, either scheduel A or Scheduel B.

Yes. I ran Universal Cooperatives Superol Gold 15W40 for 15K before I changed over to Amsoil 5w30 HDD. It's good for 15K or more.

Everybody has their own opinion. And should. As we go through years of experience we go with what we have found works best. 3 years ago when I turned 75 I decided I should quit the motorcycles, better quit to soon than too late. The dramatic increase in the volume in traffic played a large part in the decision. Motorcycle engines are subject to far more wear and oil used is more important than in larger engines. The crowd I associated with all from their own experience used synthetic oil. Mostly 15w50 Mobile 1. Never heard of a problem caused by the use of synthetic oil. I bought a 1990 Nissan 5 passenger mini van new (4 cylinder) and used 15w50 Mobile 1 and changed the oil every 25,000 I still have it. 212k and it does not burn oil. A good friend put 100k on a Boxer (BMW) Air Head (air cooled) motorcycle and decided he should overhaul the engine. To his surprise he found no wear inside the engine. He had the specs. and the precision instruments to measure and found no wear. Some honing marks were still present on the cylinder walls. His wife (a motorcycle instructor) had her own motorcycle and they would go on long trips pulling the little motorcycle trailers loaded with camping equipment. I know they have gone accros the United States and north into Canada and completely across Canada and drop down into the US and back home happy and excited about their wonderful trip which they called a little ride in the country. Another man and his wife would go anywhere anytime on their Goldwing. After he got 260k he traded it in and had never turned a bolt on the engine. He used only Mobile 1 15w50. My own experience with the various motorcycles was all good no problems and all I used was synthetic. The motorcycle dealers would say you can't use automobile oil in a motorcycle. Of course they wanted you to buy their oil. I don't know who they were trying to kid their oil was a blend of synthetic and non synthetic. When I hear negative comments about synthetic I believe the competition just wants you to buy their oil. I know that some aircraft engines that use synthetic are doubling the time before overhaul. So here is my 2 cents for what it is worth. As before do as you see fit, it is your vehicle, do what you feel good about. I have learned from others, just passing it on.

A little touchy are we? I obviously had a lot of choices on what oils and lubes to buy and I bought Amsoil. What's that tell you? I just didn't expect to see them trying to sell me supplements, that's all. Hey, maybe they sell "chill pills" that you could look in to. :-laf
