is this a good find?

Seal replacement on 1998 Dodge Ram 2500 Dana 60

Anybody have facts or recomedations (via personal experience) on synthetic oils for Cummins, 6 spd trans, rear ends? eg. How long between changes, filter recomendations, time vs. mileage changes, (I know if you are towing alot in a dirty enviornment that would definately be a factor in oil life). I am convinced "FULL" synthetic is the way to go for hi temp protection, and synthetic oils go longer intervals between changes. Also, regular oil is designed to go 10,000 miles in moderately used gas engines, (though the industry really likes us to throw our oil out after 3000 miles).

Basically, I guess the question is how badly does diesel combustion bypass into the crankcase contaminate engine oil vs. gasoline combustion? I would guess there would be a higher particulate count with diesel but does diesel break down the oil more than gasoline and why? Can synthetic oil in a Cummins engine go 10,000 miles? I know it "can" but is it a good or bad idea and why? If a higher particulate count is the only problem with diesel combustion bypass would a filter change be all that was necessary? Is the problem more a chemical reaction issue than a higher particulate count? Anybody with good facts or personal experience would be appreciated.

These questions can best be answered if you fill in your signature stating the year of your truck and what components you have in the truck. Also any mods done to it.

Some time ago TDR did a review of oil and what type to use in our trucks. The best oil to use was Royal Purple 15W-40. This was documented in several TDR magazines such as issues 54,55,56,57,58,59 and this latest issue 69 on pages 112-113. Which discuss oil and what type of certification to have.

You can review this information on this site by opening the virtual magazine an reviewing the articles on oil.

As far as your oil filters, I would use the Fleetguard Strataphore the part number is LF16035.

By the way I change my oil and filter every 5,000 miles. My cost is $45. 00, this is a filter and 3 gallons of oil. I change both of my fuel filters every 10,000 miles. One is a 5 micron and the other is a 2 micron filter. As far as I am concern it is cheaper to replace fuel filters and engine oil and filters than replacing parts on the engine or the engine it self.

Thanks for the info. I didn't know what a signature line was until you mentioned it. I am still learing to navigate my way around the web site. I will play with the computer and figure it out. For the moment, it's an all stock '05 2500 w/the 6 speed. (and I wasn't even aware there were two 6 speed trans. available until I started reading TDR, but I believe I have the 5600 model). Is your oil Royal purple? I used Mobil 1 due to some tests our local jr. college did on oil. At $6+ a quart it is worth it but it is a little prohibitive. Thanks again.

I am using Mobil Devaco 15W-40. This was rated very will by the TDR oil analysis in issue 58 or 59.

I do oil sampling every 5,000 miles thru the Fleetguard service center. So I know the condition of my engine and how it is wearing. The reports are sent to you thru e-mail and a permeant copy is sent also. The e-mail PDF copies are stored in my computer for comparison.

I buy my oil sampling bottles from Geno's Garage along with my fuel filters and oil filters.

Geno's Garage is the site sponsor for TDR. When you receive your quarterly magazine you will also receive a copy of Geno's parts catalog.

To fill out your signature go to discussion forum and then scroll down to user control panel. This is were you can add your signature and upload pic and set your preference.
