When I shift into 4 hi, truck feels like something is banging to beat hell under the drivers side floorboard, this occurs in forward and reverse. It feels like something is trying to engage but slipping out maybe. This only happens about every 3 seconds as you take off from a stop, and it's noticeably more prevalent when turning the wheels. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You are talking about on dirt or snow or something other than dry roads or concrete aren't you?

4wd hi or lo is not meant for use on hard dry surfaces.

how many miles on the truck?

Have you ever checked the fluid level in the t. case?

More than likely the chain has stretched.

It's more noticeable when turning as you are putting a bind on the driveline due to the different rotational speed of the tires (especially on dry pavement).

Almost all of my troubles have been directly related to the trans/torque converter. I probably post/ask more than i should cause i'm relatively new to all of this. I've drove a cummins since 05 but never knew how to work on them etc. I'm enjoying learning. Speaking of, i just finished my York OBA setup recently and am going to do a write up on it soon, so hopefully it'll help anyone else that also thinks kilbys prices are a little exhorbinant.

yea, like the previous post said, the chain is likely streched. my 'o4 does the same thing. does it sound like an 18 speed bike that has a chain that is stuck between sprockets? clack, clack clack??

I have not been into a 271, but have replaced chains, output shaft and seals in a 241 several times. It's pretty straightforward. I take a piece of cardboard, make a pattern and push the bolts thru the cardboard, that holds the two case halfs together. I would find a Clymers/Chilton or factory manual to guide you along, since it's your first attempt.

No. Anything special I need to know before doing so?

Only that a long-reach Torx bit is helpful for the job. T40 is the correct size.

Removing the front driveshaft will probably eliminate any noise if the culprit is a bad chain (since the front output would no longer be doing any work). But by removing the shaft it allows you to check it for smooth, quiet movement.

not much, you might hear the chain slinging around but there is no strain on it so it's unlikely to be jumping teeth.

BUT you can just disconnect the front driveshaft at the t. case, lock the t. case in 4wd (hi or lo doesn't matter) then rotate the front output shaft of the t. case (by hand) to check for excess slop/rotation of the output shaft. There is always a little bit of rotation/slop.

But if you are seeing/ feeling chain slap and more than about 10* of rotation it's chain time.

One way to get a rough idea is top get the back wheels off the ground (with the trans in park) and see how much "slop" there is in the rear output shaft. Front should be "about" the same.

Pardon the stupid question but if I take our the front drive shaft then operate it in 4hi and it is quiet and smooth, what exactly does that tell me.

That was my point - removing the front shaft may not tell you anything about the transfer case condition, but it will tell you about the front driveshaft condition. By inspecting the front driveshaft you may be able to determine that's the cause, rather than the much larger problem of the transfer case.

I think that's a great idea.

it is the chain. easy to overhaul allstate will send parts manuel with it go back with synthetic syncromesh sae50 transmission fluid

With the front driveshaft out and the truck in 4wd there is ⅝ of an inch of play in the output shaft as measured from the widest point of the seal ring. Anybody know what that tells me?
