Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) tach problem

my 01' tachometer reads incorectly. It won't read above 1k it moves from 500rpm to 1k rpm with an increase in engine speed, but even at engine WOT and defueleling it's not reading more than 1k. Any ideas?

Cam position sensor. A HUGE pain to change, you need 4 arms and 5 joints in each arm:-{}

Check your codes, if it is that sensor you should have a code.

hmmm, no codes. If the previous owner cleared it would it come back if the sensor is bad? would a bad cps affect performance?

When my CPS died, I had no tack. My truck went into a half limp mode, less throttle response and NO off idle torque. The truck would stall letting the clutch out, not even trying to correct itself.



Do you have any members close with a SMARTY to pull the codes? Sometimes the key trick doesn't show everything.

I have a co-worker that has a scan tool, so I'll check for codes tomorrow. How does one perform the key trick. (I'm new). I seem to have power, I can hit 65mph on the onramps.

Turn the key on-off-on-off-on and you should get some codes. Do this and post what the odometer displays.

Do not start the engine.

I did the key trick. . odo reads "p none".



So I used an Auto X-Ray scan tool to search for codes and there were none. however the scanner displays RPM and it was reading correctly on the scanner! does this mean I have a bad gauge cluster?

I'll second MHagen on the tach being bad. If cam sensor or crank speed sensor was going the engine should act up amoung other things.
