Started the project this morning. I did number one first, not bad... . then to number six. Hours later my arms feel like rubber, my hands raw from fighting the spring compressor (it kept slipping off the springs) I finally got number six. I have to take my hat off to anyone who says it is easy. I quit tonight with the 3 and 4 cylinders left to go. I think I read a old post that said some shop did that in an hour. I am doing both intake and exhaust... . but even if it was just the exhaust side... . just and hour? Wow I am not making flat rate on this one. I have no tips on making it any better. Unless one considers pulling the head and doing it on the bench.....

Going to bed.

Yeah, I got them on. Also hung the Pac Brake housing on the turbo and fabbed up the 4 inch exhaust. Headed it out this morning and the transmission failed. Hummmm.

Jeez Dave, hope it's not too bad!

Sounds like you had a wrestling match with the springs. TG for a 1st gen, they're easy! :-laf

I've been hanging up here more often, I got one these funny round trucks too now.

Well..... The shifter had popped out of the shift rails. The transmission was in fourth and the shifter was up in third position... . on top of the rails. The mechanic put it back in and tried to replicate. Seems ok now. We will see. At least I know what to do if it happens again.

I still might invest in some transmission upgrades at some point... . The fully splined mainshaft and better fifth gear nut.

Oh well, the education never stops.

Thanks for the concern,

D

Dave, Is there a retainer snap ring in the tower, above the shift rails? I know there is one in the Get-rag. GregH

Well, that's better than I thought it would be. I thought you had an auto!

I know if the shifter and rails get worn that if you don't shift "square", you can pop the shifter out of the rail. Not sure about the NV4500, but I did this numerous times on an old Mack I used to drive. Speed shifting was a no no. :-laf
