Single Turbo + External Wastegate Question

You left coast guys are making me jealous - I still don't have mine! Hopefully it will be here tomorrow.

WOT

I got mine today, but won't have time to install untell Monday. :(

I'd let you barrow it WOT but by the time I sent it to you you'll have yours. :D

Yes, it is the same part, however on the 3rd Gen trucks the TAG goes short end into the turbo and we use an O-Ring on the long end in the boot.

Received mine yesterday @ work, installed when I got home. Glad I did, as I had dealer work done not too long ago and the technician had left the boot from the air filter to the turbo loose on the turbo side. Lots of nice dirt particles on the inlet and blades, hope no problems down the road. Haven't put too many miles on the truck since the work. Guess I'll have to check the fittings and connections after getting my truck back from now on.

Now for the T. A. G. report. I am experiencing quicker spool up, not as much smoke, and have noticed a reduction of turbo noise in the cab. To early to tell if I am getting fuel economy increase.

Happy w/TAG but not the dealership... ...

I've been TAG'd. Finally got it. Since I just put it in about 1 hour ago don't have much to report. I can't really tell a SOP difference in performance, but the turbo whistle is WAY down (wife will like that for sure). After a couple weeks I will have a mileage report to give... .

Thanks Dave,

TAG

Got mine last Friday. Put it in but haven't driven more than 50 miles yet. Fanny dyno doesn't tell me much but the turbo whine is WAY down. Thanks WOT for putting this together.

TAG installed

I got my TAG last night and installed it this morning! Just fueled up last night so I'll be able to tell if it makes a MPG difference. Did anyone else had this problem? When I tightened the boot down the tag did not move but after an extra turn of the wrench the tag would turn:confused: back it off 3/4 of a turn and it was tight again. I did this 3 times before I decided that it was deformation of the boot causing it???!

JVMoore,

Good observation, the boot must be swelling out when the clamp it tightened and we do not want the TAG to rotate after it is installed. The clamp needs to be snug, but not too tight to hold the TAG properly.

Got my TAG yesterday. The 04. 5 is very different from the earlier 04 models.

It seems that the Dodge engineers have designed a TAG of their own. There are 2 factory devices installed post airbox - Pre Turbo to smooth out the airflow.

I think that the TAG might be able to co-exist with the other factory devices, I plan to give it a try and see if it makes any difference reducing turbo noice or increasing fuel mileage.

I plan to take some photo's of the factory devices and post them so everyone can see what the Cummins engineers came up with.

If there are not real close to the compressor then i would expect they probably do more to reduce noise than straighten airflow going into the compressor. Don't know, just a guess.

all i can say is get one. the longer i have it the more i like it. don't do like i did and just try it for one day. try it for a couple weeks. it is a very good product. would i by another one. YES thanks dave

I've had my tAG in for a little over a week, this past weekend i towed our camper 300 miles to the coasst and back, before the tAG i had turbo bark, stalling etc. and this liitle piece of stainless has cured it. nice steady power and much less intake whine/noise. next time out i'll check mileage.

Mine went in Saturday morning. I've only been able to do some driving around town - going to Lowe's to pick up 80 cu ft of wet cypress mulch, etc.

The first thing I noticed is the turbo whine & whistle is GONE - like 95% worth. I honestly can't even hear it any more. That may be a disadvantage to some, but it's nice for a towing rig - the noise gets old after 10-12 hours on the Interstate! :D

Spoolup seems quicker as well, but the real test will be hitching up the 5th wheel and hitting the road.

So far, so good. ;)

TAG Mileage

I've had my TAG installed for several weeks and immediately noticed the engine ran smoother and spool up was better. My truck seems to hold cruise speed with less effort than it used to.

On Winter fuel, I consistantly average 16. 5 mpg. The last four tanks calculated at 16. 4 to 16. 5 mpg. After installing the TAG, the next fill up calculated at 18. 2 mpg. The best mileage I have ever gotten (19. 7 mpg) was when I "babied" my truck thru a whole tank of fuel, just to see what I could get. You would go insane driving one of these trucks like I did and it really takes all the fun out of driving one.

I am skeptical about this number, which is the reason I've held back from posting this, but it's what the calculator came up. Before I am absolutely convinced that the TAG actually made this difference, I want to see if the results are repeatable. I use my truck to commute back and forth to town and have made absolutely no other changes, other than installing the TAG. Driving conditions were the same before and after the install.

Does it help? Yup, I think it does.

Second tank of fuel calculated 18. 7 mpg on Winter fuel. Looks like almost 2 mpg better economy with the TAG installed. A friend who purchased one an made a trip to Las Vegas last week called me when he returned and said his fuel economy was up by almost 2 mpg.

I Can tell a definite improvement in the way my CTD runs. Smoother, quieter and seems to have even more 'zip' when acceleration. I am happy with my TAG and feel it is well worth the price. Great job Dave !
