I took my p7100-911 pump apart last week. There is absolutely no way that I could see to hurt the pump in any way by removing the plate. The rack looks like a piece of angle iron with notches in it. With no plate, it bottoms out on the stop plug at the front of the pump. There is no weak little pin that will break. There is a pin on the back of the rack in the govenor housing. It is pushed by an arm from the shutoff solenoid to move the rack all the way back when you turn off the key. It kind of looks like it is stopping the rack IF YOU TAKE THE PLUG OUT. Even then this is still not the case and you can slide that arm out of the way to prove it. Even if the rack was stopped by that "little" pin, there is NO WAY you could ever put enough force on that pin to break it.



Now all you plate-vending people try to prove me wrong. :D
 
I took mine out also. I don't think there is any way to hurt that pin that conects the govenor to the rack either. There is a very soft spring that the govenor pushes on to move the rack and that spring could never shear that pin.

I've got 370s on order and I am making a waste gate control and the timing is set at 15 and the KDP is fixed and I am planning on having some fun!!!.

Joe D talked about this at a seminar I attended, and he mentioned that it wasnt a good idea to remove the plate because of the possibility of that that little pin breaking. That is good enough reason for me to leave the plate in. To each his own...
 
The other thing I noticed when I was in there was that the AFC arm looked like it would keep the rack from full travel as well.

EGT's would probably get out of hand without a plate in a BIG time hurry on the 180 and 215 pumps... . this is just a theory..... my truck is the only one I've ever driven/worked on that is plateless.
 
By the way thanks to Matt and Chris( strick9) for leading the way on this and helping me to understand that I was not going to hurt anything.

It's your pump, don't believe me, take your chances. I showed those at the Texas Rally who were interested the pump parts, rack, pin, etc. I am responding for the benefit of those who are trying to learn and otherwise might think everyone concurs with your assessment.

I never once said that there are NO worries about running plateless.

Joe- post a picture of the part that MIGHT break. I dare ya! In the 911 pump I took apart, there was NOT ANY CHANCE of something breaking because there is no plate in the pump. If there is any way a piece of angle iron cut square hitting the end cap will break something, let me know. THE RACK IS NOT STOPPED BY ANY PIN WHEN RUNNING WITHOUT A PLATE!!!!!!!!!!!! IT IS STOPPED BY THE END CAP. There is absolutely no chance of breaking anything or the rack getting stuck.
 
BTW- when I get my truck back I will be tweaking that pump hardcore!!! I can't believe they are so simple! Spill port? What do ya need to stop injection for? HEHEHEH!!!
 
The plate is nothing more than a multi-rpm throttle stop. If you don't get on it, there will be absolutely no change. None. If you use the extra fuel, then your mileage will probably suffer.
 
Joe please explain how the pin can shear. I could not see any way it could get a load on it when I looked in there and ran the throttle back and forth and wached the rack go from 0 to the stop plug.
 
Well it looks like the engineers at Bosch who designed the pump were pretty lame and the folks at TST wasted their time perfecting several different plates... :rolleyes:
 
Certainly no one is saying there is no reason for the plates! Why don't you explain why and how damage would occur. Gosh maybe we should call bosh every time we make an adjustment to make sure that the engineers aprove!!
 
okay, so you guys are telling me that if i take my #5 plate completely out and run plateless that it will be no more dangerous to my engine/pump than with my plate. also if this is true; what kind of power/smoke difference is there, also is there a boost increase? thanks,

Yeah like Got Smoke said, if any of youes don't want your #11 plate, I'll pay postage for it to be mailed to me. :D



I'm looking for a #11 plate, so don't go throwing that old #11 plate in the scrap metal bin at the town dump.
