why do diesels run so long compared to gassers

Power loss with winter fuel

I just looked at a 98 12 valve 5sp Qcab long box. It just came in to the ford dealers lot. They let me take it for a spin. Fist thing I noticed is a very tight throttle. I think I could take care of that. I come back. I tell the sales guy about the throttle. See he wants to drive it now. So I get to go for another ride. We come back and park the truck. I had noticed some oil spot on the ground where it had been parked. So I crawl under to see where the oil is coming from. I tell him I can't see where the oil is coming from. He said we'll bring it to the shop and put it on the lift. So he puts it on the lift. I go underneath and could see oil all over the eara of the timing gear cover. The mechanic says that commom on the cumminGs. I said " mine doesn't do that. What does a ford mechanic know if he can't even say cummins right. Other then that it ran very well. Shifted fine. It was stock I checked the afc housing. So I say no. :(

I'm also looking for an ol beater vehicle. So saw an s-10 pickup. An early 90's model. It ran farely good. But 80 psi of oil pressure made me wonder. The engine servive light came on. For a 4. 3 it had no guts.

Then found an eth dee . It only had 22k miles on it. Dealer treated it like gold for as much as he wanted for it. Back in May found a 96 xcab 5spd 4x4 long box. That had 36k miles on it. That deal would have screwed me too.

I've been scewed enough in vehicle purchases. There's a saying. Money talks & the bullsh!t walks.

Whatcha lookin for Jeff...

You think your not having any luck. I've pretty much decided next year I'm going to trade for a Extended Cab 3500... ... . what's the catch you ask? I don't want a 24 Valve, but I was a Quad Cab... how so? 98. 4 Quad Cab 4x4 5spd 3500 i. e. RARE:eek:

That's gonna be hard cause I won't settle for anything else. :{

Jeff

You must ask yourself one ?

Do I have more time or more money?

Be patient you will find that truck.

Good luck on your hunt.

Tim

I took one for a test drive today

I just took a '97ext. cab 4x4 5 speed for a test drive today from a auto dealer's lot. Truck had 97k on it. It had been repainted, but the inside of the box was rough and covered over with a bed-liner. The underside of the truck looked good except for a steering gearbox leak. The bottom of the door skins looked like they were ready to pop through on the inside. Anyway, I took the truck for a drive. It fired right up, and the clutch felt good. When I got the truck in 5th gear, I couldn't believe how doggy it was. There was a slight incline, and the truck wouldn't maintain 60mph:eek: I drove it about 15 miles, and it felt like the accelerator wasn't doing anything from about half throttle down to the floor. I got back and could see that the throttle was going wide open, and that the fuel shutoff solenoid had been replaced. I went back into the office, and told the salesman that the truck was suffering from low power. His response? "Those Cummings need quite a bit of time to warm up. Also, the filters are probably dirty and they cost $135 to replace them". I just kinda chuckled and told him I've owned two different CTD's and that if he is paying $135 for filters, he is getting screwed bad. The bad part was the asking price was $18. 9K:(

Truck

Lots of CTDs in N. Texas, Bonham and Dallas area. Wait till spring and come down and look and maybe we can go fishing. bg

Just for anybody who might be looking around for us guys "thinking of shopping" I want to retract my previous statement. I think I'm gonna stick to a 2500 (just depends on what's out there) but I believe I would take a 97 or 98 12 Valve Extended cab either one as long as its 5spd 4x4.

Sorry Jeff not trying to hijack your post, but I would almost bet you've recieved Emails or PM's reguarding our post's of "looking"

I know what your talking about, my family is sorta looking for one right now and it is hard to find one with all the exact things we want:97-01 2500, QC longbed 4wd 5sd or 6, white or silver maybe leather but would take cloth if everything else is right.

We haven't decided if we're really in the market for one yet.

But it seems their either 2wd or auto or something.

oops can't forget the most important thing it has to have(can you guess)??

Steve

Me too, to all of this. I have been looking for a 1994-1998 12v extended cab 4X4 in good shape with a manual... . good luck? :(

Notes: Front cover oil leaks on cummins b & c engines are not abundant, but don't be suprised if you run across them. BTW, this is not a difficult fix either... . if the price is right.

Low power and a new fuel solenoid: It might have been out of adjustment..... not letting full fuel. Just FYI

Jeff;

Oil all over the timing gear cover IS pretty standard on the Dodge/Cummins-----its generally from the crankcase breather tube. Do a search on breather tube. there have been several threads on the subject. Many of us have moved/modified the tube to get rid of the problem.

Vaughn

oil from the timing gear cover? is it cracked? KDP... it was luck that i got my 98 12v since i could barely find any cummins trucks period (especially low miles and in great shape).

Tom.

stay away from dealers

You didnt say you were only in the market for a 12 valve, but that is what you looked at. No matter other than I just bought a 98 24v. I was looking for a couple of years and wouldnt have bought this truck except that it was the first I found that has an acceptable price, I originally wanted a 98 12 v. Want I really wanted to say was that Dealers are priced way to high on these trucks. They most likely would be asking close to 20 for the one I bought for 13. 5. Quad CAB SLT, 2wd , auto. 115k. Thats based on my two years of looking. So I suggest what ever you buy get it from a private owner and you should save in the nieghborhood of five thousand . Dealers are much better at hiding problems also. Screw those thiefs by not giving them your business. I sold by Dakota after I bought the Diesel and got 2500 for it. . The most I was ever offered on a trade in was a thousand. Seriously save thousands by looking for a private owner no matter what year you buy.

Jeff,

Oil on the front cover of a 12 valve is not all that common. The oil breather tube is a lot farther back on the 12 valve than the 24 valve. If the leak on the 12 valve was bad it might be in indicator of a KDP failure. There are other leak sources, of course, but watch for that one.

Went browsing around the next town over today because they always seem to have the majority of CTD's. Anyways the only 12 Valve I found was actually a 4x4 Quad Cab!:--) I was just about ready to start deal'n with the guy even though it was a shortbed just because of how rare the truck was and I looked into the cab!:{ :{ :{ automatic

Talked to the guy for a couple of minutes, told him he had a rare item and he's like "oh it must be the HO" I said "NO Dodge only made a few 12 Valve's in 98, and some with a QC" His response was "oh I didn't I had a rare truck this is the 2nd time I've had it" seems a gentleman had bought the truck and traded it back in for a Powerjoke. Poor guy..... didn't know what he had.

Oh well it was an absolute beautfiul truck 98 4x4 QC Shortbed Auto with 90K miles, looked well taken care of to me, and only $18. 500. If anybody in the TN area is interested PM me for details on the truck, I have to have a 5spd though.
