The best way to get started in Ham radio is
to buy the Technician class FCC License Prep
book by Gordon West. Radio Shack sells them.
Find out where the next testing session is
in your area and set that date as a deadline.
The tests are multiple choice Q & A. Not very
difficult stuff, basically simple electronics
and theory, and operating basics.
There is a small fee to take the test but if
you don't pass it on the first attempt, you
can retake for free on the same day. The
questions will be different though. Study the
book! Memorize the correct answer to each
question (cram, cram!

)
You don't have to take a Morse code test
to get your Tech license!
Once you get your license there is a whole
new world open for you. Local VHF, digital,
computer stuff, Amateur radio satellites,
UHF local/repeaters, amateur TV; HF shortwave
contacts (HF requires a General or higher
classification, simple 5 words per minute
morse code), DX (long distance contacts, ie
Japan, Europe, etc), more digital stuff, lots
of amateur satellite/SSB (single-sideband)
activity on HF too.
I'm into VHF & repeaters, APRS (a kind of
digital mode, uses GPS' and computers) and
VHF satellite stuff.
