Pre-Race party for 2nd annual Nowel Thomas Drags

I met a LOT of other Amateur Radio operators at the 2000 May Madness. Some were interested in starting a TDR net or on-air group. How about caravaning to events? Or a Special Event Station at the next May Madness? Open for suggestions.

Well, it's been almost a month since you
posted your message. I am a Tech Plus, soon
to upgrade to General (whenever I get around
to-it!).

I think it would be neat to have some ham
radio related activity. Too bad most folks
don't want to spend the money for equipment
or take the time to get licensed.

Right now I have plans to install a
"headache" rack so I can mount some nice
antennas and get on the HF bands while
mobile. I have a Yaesu FT-900AT that is
begging for space in my 2001 3500!

Mine is a '99 3500. Big truck, but not much room for radios. I had a 900 CAT. Good radio. Now have a Kenwood 570S with 6 meters.
I put on one special event at a regonal cowboy action shooting meet. A lot of fun, dispite a solar flare that loused up HF. Would like to do one the day before May Madness 2001 starts--If there is a 2001 MM--Anyone else want to work on it?

I'd like to join in on some of this. I've snooped around getting some ideas on how to install my gear and keep it clean so nothing is in the truck yet. But, come May 2001 I'm sure I'll have gotten around to it.
Are you talking a Travel Net on HF? Or a more local net as you travel together?
Mike

I am not a ham, but have thought about getting into it. What is the best way to get started? What books, etc? Where to get regs and study material, etc? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I just picked up my truck yesterday and was amazed at all the DX AM radio stations I could get without igniton noise and power line wipeout, etc. So it must be great for 75 meters... any hints on antenna mounting that wont be too intrusive when demounted... Of course in South Carolina you can blend with the CBers fairly well. At this point Im not ready to drill holes in the new truck. I love the Dodge... Go 9 (Bill Elliott)

The best way to get started in Ham radio is
to buy the Technician class FCC License Prep
book by Gordon West. Radio Shack sells them.

Find out where the next testing session is
in your area and set that date as a deadline.

The tests are multiple choice Q & A. Not very
difficult stuff, basically simple electronics
and theory, and operating basics.

There is a small fee to take the test but if
you don't pass it on the first attempt, you
can retake for free on the same day. The
questions will be different though. Study the
book! Memorize the correct answer to each
question (cram, cram! #ad
)
You don't have to take a Morse code test
to get your Tech license!

Once you get your license there is a whole
new world open for you. Local VHF, digital,
computer stuff, Amateur radio satellites,
UHF local/repeaters, amateur TV; HF shortwave
contacts (HF requires a General or higher
classification, simple 5 words per minute
morse code), DX (long distance contacts, ie
Japan, Europe, etc), more digital stuff, lots
of amateur satellite/SSB (single-sideband)
activity on HF too.

I'm into VHF & repeaters, APRS (a kind of
digital mode, uses GPS' and computers) and
VHF satellite stuff.

Thanks Matt,

This needs to stay at an elevated position. Those of you who are OTR drivers, what HF frequencies do you congregate around?

My old favorite was 40 meters most of the time back when I had a Galaxy 3 SSB rig in the middle '60s. I am embarassed to say that I have not been an active amatuer radio operator since about 1990. It is time to break the ice again.

I travel between 0530-0600 Phoenix time year 'round. Home trip is 1630-1500. If enough activity gets started up, I will put my old TS-180 in the company truck and be available through the day from time to time.

My favorite mode was CW, even used it mobile when going to college on a 45 mile one way trip each day. Then my rig was homebrew 807 driven by a 12BQ7 from a oscillator I have since forgotten. All was constructed in those BC series rack mount military radio chassis. Receiver was a Q5'ver with either a 40 meter or 80 meter RX box in front of it. Can't believe I have forgotten all of the nomenclatures now. CRS disease big time.

73,

John

I'm always looking for ways to interconnect my hobbies... this is one of them for sure.

Even though I've only really talked on 11-meters in my trucks ( )... I've been known to do a little 2-meter repeater work from time to time on the HT now that I have my ticket.

Matt

I was searching the archives looking for hints on installing my new FT-857 and I found this thread. I had a IC-706 in my old '90 W250 but someone else wanted it more than me so I sold it a few years ago. Currently, I have a FT-2600 vhf rig in the cup holder hole but I can lose it as the 857 has VHF in it also. I worked a lot of DX from my old truck on 15m and 20m from 96-99 using hamstick whip antennas mounted on my headache rack. I'm not sure if where to mount my new screwdriver antenna (no headache rack on this truck yet). I guess I'll just have to get one. I'm not sure if any one will read this but thought I'd throw it out there to let other TDR hams know that there are a few more of you.

Terry, VE7TLL/VE7SR
