I want to thank Illflem for pointing out the www.noria.com oil analysis site. I’ve been searching for this type of info on lube related maintenance issues for years. I understand a fair bit of chemistry and physics, but that’s not sufficient to make intelligent decisions about the best lubes to use. That’s because as consumers we have to depend on information provided provided by lube manufactures and their sales forces. The folks at the noria site are oil analysis professionals who base their opinions and recommendations on years of real world data and experience with different lubes, including engine tear down studies.
All TDR members, especially us techno-geeks, can learn a great deal from this site. Much of the info involves industrial applications rather than automotive stuff, but it is highly worthwhile wading through all the links to find what you need. I highly recommend the Learning Center and the Message Boards.
For an example of a thread that should be of interest to many TDR members, check out:

Compare the information in this thread with the endless sales claims, speculation, and testimonials presented in the numerous oil discussions we have had at the TDR site.
