Stainless tips for 5" pipe

Htt 64/14

I promised the II guys I would give them a plug if they could build me a turbo that worked well. Here it is :)

I haven't been in this hobby long but maybe long enough to make my experiences so far worth something to someone getting started. Things I have learned along the way... Having a good setup with properly matched components is hard to find and in many cases is a hit or miss proposition. You can read and try and learn from others and then make educated guess' but in the end you never quite know what you will end up with. I had what I still think is a very nice setup running Mach4s, Comp, and a B1-2. Great drivability with 500+hp. Spooled very nicely, ran cool EGTs, with minimal smoke. Then I got greedy lol. If some is good then more is better right. I sold that setup and ordered some Mach6s and a Steroid B1 from TAD. I still have no clue what is up with them guys(TAD) but three months of waiting and getting the same old story about no housings this and no wheels that, I gave up.

I then contacted II and decided on giving them a try. I told them what I was trying to accomplish and listened to Shane as he advised that I could try a couple options. We went with a custom 66 that he felt might be the ticket. Didn't work lol. Way too laggy at 6000' and my truck smoked like a freight train. I sent it back and next we tried a different configuration. Worked a lot better but I still wanted better spool. I wanted a 600hp truck with a big single that I could drive at 6000' with no smoke and that would spool like stock. Was that asking too much? I think not lol. So several weeks went by and behind the scenes Shane was working on different ideas. I'm sure he was like who the hell is this guy expecting me to build a turbo that would cool 600hp and spool like a stock turbo at sea level let alone 6000' lol.

Long story short he sent me a 64 a few days ago he had been working on. I don't know what all he has done to it but I can tell you this thing has made driving with Mach6s a piece of cake with nary a huff of smoke off the line. It starts spooling around 15-1600 and by 1750 it is off to the races. While that may not sound like much for folks at sea level, trust me at 6000' that is pretty amazing. It cools the 6s & Comp nicely. I can drive 45 miles to work on my normal 3x5 and never see more than 1400 EGTs with several "give me a ticket" blasts. On 5x5 buried in 5th it will touch 1500 by the time you're tapped out. Short bursts usually won't go over 1300 @ 37psi on 3x5 and 1400 @ 43psi on 5x5.

Bottom line it works very well. I want to thank Shane, Brett, and Brady, for the willingness to work with me and help me find that elusive perfect combination. I know there are those who desire more technical facts and less hype from the II guys. I hear you but all I can say is that sometimes trial & error is the best way to figure things out. Theory and intellectual pursuits are fine but application of rubber to the road is where it's at. Trust me I have applied a little bit of rubber to the road over the last couple days This 64 rocks :-laf

PS I guess I should give Don a plug too. Who would have thought a no/low smoke ~600hp daily driver would be possible. F1 injectors are the shizzola.

Glad to see thing are working for you now,i thought 350-400(haven"t dyno yet but i should be there)with my set up is enought,(bin there done that,2nd turbo/injectors/box etc). My b1-2 is making me happy as well as the 1. 5s,would like to go bigger some day but i do tow a TT and am very cautious and don"t want to drive by the pyro---maybe some 2. 5,or 4's if no towing. It seems that II it going in the right direction anyways, when my vp44 goes south, definetly a "HOTROD" version from them is going to replace the stock one. Goodluck and keep us posted on the new turbo. DW :D

I know it has been a long haul for you, glad to read that you got it nailed! Speaks volumes for sticking to your goals and working with the right people to accomplish them.

It certainly wasn't life altering in the bigger scope of things but I learned a valuable lesson in regards to jumping before looking lol. I left out all the gory details of having a dead truck for 2/3 of the summer after selling off parts and figuring out that some of this crap doesn't just grow on trees. I guess the up side is my tires ought to last another summer lol.

Haha it will take more than this experience for this lesson to sink in lol. Next will be Onion-Rings, studs, one of Don's cams, a Redline box, a Catcher, and some NOS. I'll be in touch Bob. I'm a glutton for punishment :D

NOS? ... ..... hahahahahahahahaha... ... . wait till I tell the others LOL

Never figured you of all people would have a drug habit..... :-laf

what kind of clutch do you have behind that thing.

BOB, If luke wants it to TRY send him my cacher to try after it gets flashed special. I won't need it for a while Im in the--this is fun but the stocker cluch has givinn all its got SCOTTY one more like that and shes gona blow-- BOAT, I am shipping it out today.

Con FE right now.

Tim LMFAO if you can't beat them join them lol. I'll still find something to pick on them Chebie/Fode boys about lol.

Rivercat, thx for that offer. Which flash is it? I have been talking to Bob for sometime regarding trying one. He's a little slow :) I rode in Will's truck the other day that has one. Definitely fuels hard off the bottom(smoke city). He needs a bigger spinny thing :) I really want to avoid a smokey situation if I can. I am pretty tickled with my current setup. Runs hard and easy to drive moderately aggressively with little/no smoke. That being said the big boys keeps saying the Redline and Catcher is where it's at so I'll probably try that this winter.

right now it is regular 02 fed sixspeed

I am going to have bob send it to be flashed special for use with a new drag comp on the way soon.

I know of a 12V that was at say 325hp and jumped from a stock 35/12 to a 64 from II and he actually complains about it spooling too quick, said he would rather have something a little laggy.

Now that right there is funny lol. I don't think that will ever be a problem for any turbo. It will be a cold day in hell when I get in my truck and think to myself, well dam* I wish this turbo wouldn't spool so fast! Where's my doggy delay that I've grown to love so much? Come on Jim lol.

As I said above a B1-2 with a Comp and Mach4s is a very nice setup. Mine would light at about 1500 maybe 1600.

and you are at 600 with this setup? I know of a similarly setup truck that puts down 565 in the truth booth(dyno). I am VERY excited to see that it is driveable with that big single though! :)

Hrmm, maybe he means from 10-45 psi, seems a few have posted how fast. . as in "a blink of an eye" that happens with these II chargers. If you were not use to it, it sounds like it might make for not so smooth part throttle drivability.

The 0-10 psi is what I would be concerned to mess with in pulling off my stock charger, its plenty slow as it is, so surely he couldn't have been talking about getting it spun up.

Maybe that's it Matt. That being said every turbo I have ever tried took off like a bat outta hell once it lit.

Edgerat, I have not had it on the dyno since I swapped injectors and sticks. Drivability is certainly a relative term. My brother drove it last weekend and was smoking out everyone whenever he took off lol. You have to learn to balance the right foot with the turbo. That is what I was having trouble with before this turbo. To drive without smoke you had to be sooo careful. With this turbo and the fact that it will start making boost so much sooner, it is a lot easier to drive without huffing big clouds. Either way, you can't drive around stomping the peddle with this much fuel and any turbo and not expect annoying clouds of smoke.

I find that my sps66 tends to be slower than stock to 10lbs, 10-50 is "blink of an eye". Lukewarmwater is right on, you can't stomp on 600hp worth of fuel and not expect a good puff of smoke at the minimum.

Matt400, the truck doesn't seem to be touchy at part throttle. My boost only shoots to 45lb+ if my right foot has made the request. Otherwise (unloaded at least can't say about towing), the application of power is just as predictable as stock. Which is to say if you get on the fuel on wet pavement you WILL be sideways. :D
