I promised the II guys I would give them a plug if they could build me a turbo that worked well. Here it is
I haven't been in this hobby long but maybe long enough to make my experiences so far worth something to someone getting started. Things I have learned along the way... Having a good setup with properly matched components is hard to find and in many cases is a hit or miss proposition. You can read and try and learn from others and then make educated guess' but in the end you never quite know what you will end up with. I had what I still think is a very nice setup running Mach4s, Comp, and a B1-2. Great drivability with 500+hp. Spooled very nicely, ran cool EGTs, with minimal smoke. Then I got greedy lol. If some is good then more is better right. I sold that setup and ordered some Mach6s and a Steroid B1 from TAD. I still have no clue what is up with them guys(TAD) but three months of waiting and getting the same old story about no housings this and no wheels that, I gave up.
I then contacted II and decided on giving them a try. I told them what I was trying to accomplish and listened to Shane as he advised that I could try a couple options. We went with a custom 66 that he felt might be the ticket. Didn't work lol. Way too laggy at 6000' and my truck smoked like a freight train. I sent it back and next we tried a different configuration. Worked a lot better but I still wanted better spool. I wanted a 600hp truck with a big single that I could drive at 6000' with no smoke and that would spool like stock. Was that asking too much? I think not lol. So several weeks went by and behind the scenes Shane was working on different ideas. I'm sure he was like who the hell is this guy expecting me to build a turbo that would cool 600hp and spool like a stock turbo at sea level let alone 6000' lol.
Long story short he sent me a 64 a few days ago he had been working on. I don't know what all he has done to it but I can tell you this thing has made driving with Mach6s a piece of cake with nary a huff of smoke off the line. It starts spooling around 15-1600 and by 1750 it is off to the races. While that may not sound like much for folks at sea level, trust me at 6000' that is pretty amazing. It cools the 6s & Comp nicely. I can drive 45 miles to work on my normal 3x5 and never see more than 1400 EGTs with several "give me a ticket" blasts. On 5x5 buried in 5th it will touch 1500 by the time you're tapped out. Short bursts usually won't go over 1300 @ 37psi on 3x5 and 1400 @ 43psi on 5x5.
Bottom line it works very well. I want to thank Shane, Brett, and Brady, for the willingness to work with me and help me find that elusive perfect combination. I know there are those who desire more technical facts and less hype from the II guys. I hear you but all I can say is that sometimes trial & error is the best way to figure things out. Theory and intellectual pursuits are fine but application of rubber to the road is where it's at. Trust me I have applied a little bit of rubber to the road over the last couple days This 64 rocks :-laf
PS I guess I should give Don a plug too. Who would have thought a no/low smoke ~600hp daily driver would be possible. F1 injectors are the shizzola.
