Like most everyone else I have tried different air filters: stock, K&N (OEM relacement), Amsoil and Scotty. It wasn't curiosity that got me started; rather it was oil ysis that reported unusually high levels of silicon. Soon as I got that report out went the original air cleaner and in went the OEM K&N. Some time later another oil ysis and yes, silicon again. Out went the K&N and in went the Amsoil.
After that, things went from bad to worse. For those of you that don't know, the Amsoil filter is saturated with oil and in no time I had oil all over the intake pipe, the turbo and even the intercooler. The Amsoil filter went straight into the trash. Worst mistake I ever made. Please, don't ever talk to me about Amsoil air filters.
Needless to say, I was getting a little concerned. Cleaned up all the mess from the Amsoil fiasco and then followed Scotty's suggestion: installed a K&N RE-0880 conical filter and a K&N Air Force Pre Cleaner (25-0880). BTW the Pre-Cleaner is a red foam filter wrap the fits around the K&N filter and is said to stop 90% of the dirt while causing a 2% flow restriction.
That was 2500 miles ago. Several days ago I decided it was time to inspect the intake system and so I removed the filter. I was a little nervous because the Pre-Cleaner was now brown from dirt. When I removed the filter I saw that the intake pipe and turbo were ABSOLUTELY SPOTLESS. No dust or oil anywhere. I was elated!
For me, this experience lays to rest two comments that continually appear in this forum regarding K&N filters: (1) They don't filter out dirt. Nonesense; they do! I'm convinced the factory air box is the problem in our trucks. No matter how hard you try, dirt will likely get AROUND any air cleaner you install. Greasing the perimiter is a valiant attempt to cure the problem, but the odds are stacked against success. (2) K&N bleeds oil into the intake. They do not. With the factory oiled RE-0880, there was no oil seepage at all. It seems the problem arises when the K&N is cleaned and re-oiled. With the best of intentions, people (like myself) put too much oil on the filter. That's when problems occur. The beauty of Scotty's system is that it leaves the factory K&N intact and makes the Pre-Cleaner the maintenance item. As a result, there is no problem with too much oil.
My experience teaches me this: consider replacing the factory air box because its design is inherently flawed. Replace it with a system that prevents air from passing around the filter such as Scotty's. I know of no other method that will assure that no dust will find its way into the engine. I know this from first hand experience and I can't thank Scotty enough for designing this filtration system.
