Mobil is about to make Delvac 1 more widely available - their top of the line group 4 synthetic CI-4 Certified diesel oil. They are calling it Truck/Suv oil and I believe it will be carried in wal-marts as soon as this spring!! That should hopefully knock the price down. Through email mobil has responded that this is in fact re-labeled Delvac 1, although it's not being specifically marketed to just diesels. Great news!

Might be ok in the winter, but I think I'd want something a little thicker in the summer. 5W just doesn't sound good when it's hot.

delvac 1 5w40 is good all year round... my local walmarts all have the delvac 1 on the shelves but dang, it's more expensive than amsoil here... . [over $10 a liter canadian funds]

Glad to hear the news. I'll probably still purchase from the local oil dealer. I was planning to switch the Mommy van over to Delvac 1 on the oil change. I get it for about the same price as Amsoil 5W-30 but want the higher -40 rating for summer usage.

Delvac 1 is an excellant year around oil.

Think about it, Wally World selling Delvac 1 right next to their Fram filters!

I still think it's too low in viscosity for hot weather. Plus, I don't like an oil with so much spread in viscosity from 5w to 40. That spread is made up of polymers that enhance viscosity and also displace the lubricating ability of the oil.

15w-40 is a better choice unless it is very very cold and you have difficulties starting your engine.

Not to start an oil war here, but Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme, group 4 synth. , is fully endourced by Cummins. It is a 5W-40 product.

Given that the product's viscosity rating goes to 40 it likely protects the same as a 15W-40 without the stress of cold weather starts. "40" is "40".

Am I missing something here?

Yes, you're missing the part where Valvoline Prem B lue Extreme is made with petroleum basestocks, LOL. It's a group 3! Without question.

You're correct about 40 is a 40 for the most part. 5w-40's really start to show their benefit over a 15w40 in cold temps. For example, under 10f, delvac 1 is much much more fluid than say amsoil 15w40.

How is 40 weight oil too thin for the summer?

Pay no attention to the 5w... . that is cold viscosity...

Secondly, my personal opinion is that we don't need 40 weight at all... But my credentials don't mean much I suppose.

Curatchko - I agree, saying a 40 weight is too thin for the summer is silly. As far as 'we' don't 'need a 40 weight at all in the summer - speak for yourself. It's not quite as warm in South Lyon as it is in Sarasota I'd wager :)
