Just got a call from the machine shop and out of both heads are cracked one is cracked between the valve seats and the other has cracks in the valve seats that extend passed the valve seats

That is a really annoying outcome. Could the two heads be welded together to be used as a mail box post?

Were they both used heads? I've never been able to re-use 12 valve or early 24 valve head when replacing gaskets as they have always been cracked.

I paid $1750.00 for a new head from cummins when I rebuilt my engine. New casting, new valves ,springs, guides, retainers and seals. Just bolt it on. It was cheeper to go this way than rebuilding the head off my old engine.

Two years ago. Purchased it through Outside Machine in Olympia Wa. I was wrong on the price. It was $1700.00

Thanks for all the replies I guess I’ll have to see what options I have . Right now neither of my regular suppliers have come up with anything but the one place did say he got big cummins heads from a place but he will need the numbers off the engine plate

Power Driven Diesel $1540.00
CPP Diesel $1750.00
Fleece Performance $1888.95
Shipping isn't that much.
Mine went a little more.
I did some work on it.

Seems like best bet world be remanufactured from Cummins or a well known vendor that'll warranty it. Beats screwing around with something used that you don't know has a problem till the machine shop calls... that you've learned right

For what it's worth, the last 2 heads I've purchased were described as "offshore" origin and I assumed China. They both had "Tupy" casting identification and packaging showed Brazil as country of origin. 12 valve head was complete and was 920.00. The 24 valve head was 1100.00 and was also complete. These are new heads. The wholesaler in Anchorage sources them when I need them.

I was just surprised to get Tupy castings for that kind of money.....heck, I paid more than that for a set of 5.2 Magnum Chrysler cylinder heads!
I didn’t realize poopy was synonymous with quality? I know of 5 different cracked 53 blocks they didn’t cast right .
