Hey guys. Over the last few hundred miles the trany in the crew has started making noises. I say last few hundred, as I don't remember the problem when I first got it, but then again I might just have not payed attention to it ( or mabee the dealership where I got it had someway of disguising the sound untill I got it).

The problem is in low rpm in 2 and 4 the transmission moans and down shifting into 3 creates real issues. When I try to go into gear, it does not want to go in, so I back off into nutral, and after mabee 2 seconds a heap of noise akin to running a bucket off bolts through a blender or like a really bad gear mesh emits from the trans. Is this the dreaded failure of the getrag noise?

So my question is how much is the Getrg rebuild kit and where to get it?

Also a consideration is the NV5600. What is involved to make it fit, how much, and where to get it?

Robert

Edit. What is the problem with the trans?

I would go with a NV4500 or NV5600 conversion. Quad 4x4 is the place to get all that stuff. They shipped me a new transmission and everything within a week. I was very happy with all of their service. I'm going to order other things from them now too.

I dont know how much or what you tow but the getrag can last OK too if you rebuild it and not exchange it. Sometimes the price of a rebuild can be nearly as much as a NV transmission tho so be careful to price out your options.

Pull it, open it up, inspect, see what condition its in. Did you service/drain refill, overfill by one quart with synthetic 5w30 engine oil after you bought it???? If not, I'd pull it. But if you're not capable of that, drain the dealers gear oil out of it, remove the two PTO covers and inspect the gears for damage. REfill with 5 quarts of synthetic 5w30 motor oil.

The getrag is not as bad as some guys make it out to be. Some people can tear up an anvil. The 5600 is not that hard to put in, but you need to add an extra leaf to your front springs. The extra weight of the transmission more than offsets the lessening of the weight of your wallet. I would not have done the conversion if I wasn't planning on upping the hp a little bit.

Getrag

From all I can determine regarding the 4x4 and the getrag, they are just barely adequate and must be maintained far better than they commonly get. I have had extraordinary success with my twd and getrag but realize that the fwd certainly imposese a greater load. Plenty of owners have changed to the 4500 and express great satisfaction. I have a 4500 that is apart and it does not impress me. If I were going to spend the money, I would skip the 4500 and go to the 5600.

I have built some getrags and assure you that it can be done. It would be a fraction of the change over cost.

Sorry yours died.

Got Dad to play with it and he thinks it is the snycros and all that type of stuff. What is the cost of each option. To rebuild a getrag, and install a NV5600 (I prefer a 6 over a 5).

I admit it is expensive. The 6 speed is real nice on a stock powered truck. That big hole between 3rd and 4th sort of goes away.

Call 1-800-std-tran and discuss your options with them. They can sell you parts to rebuild it yourself, rebuild your Getrag, or sell you a conversion kit with a built 4500 (perhaps a 5600, but that costs more) with the good mainshaft and 5th gear nut.
