Seems like everytime I finally get the money together to get a performance module, something else on my truck takes a dump! Was on my way to watch the truck pulls saturday night, and while pulling a fairly steep hill in 6th gear, somewhere between 1500and2000rpms, I got the dreaded dead pedal. It only lasted a second or 2 and the truck has run fine ever since. I have noticed a dead spot in the powerband from about 1900-2200rpms and a "surge" while cruising at around 60mph, with or without the cuise on. I can't feel the surge, but I can hear it. Anyways, I was hoping maybe it was just the apps, but I got a chance to finally check for codes today, and it was a po216. I just installed a FASS 150gph fuelsystem (unit with filters) a little over a weekago, so the lift pump has been taken care of. Never had a dead pedal before that. I also installed a Vulcan DrawStraw inplace of the factory fuel pick up. I know some might say that since I was going up a hill, it might have been sucking air, but I had 3/4 of a tank and I have run it down below 1/8 of a tank, going up hill, and it still picked up fuel fine. Unfortunately, i don't have a fuel press. gauge to make sure the FASS is working like it should, I was waiting for Quads new race box to come out and was gonna get it with the Commander and use that to monitor my fuel press. Anyways, what would you guys do, just run it, or should I put a new inj. pump on? I'd really hate to have this thing leave me stranded somewhere. Also, my truck is an H. O. , and I wanna put a S. O. pump on it to help support future performance mods. MidwestFuelInjection was recommended to me if thats the route I wanna go. Anyone else have a recommendation?

I would get a fp gauge immediately & monitor the readings. Then I would run it till it dropped. If you have another vehicle to drive... . send the pump to Industrial Injection to have it checked out & repaired. 0216 is a death code & usually won't just disappear.

I'm not sure if you can put an SO pump on an HO engine and everything is fine. I'd get a professional opinion or two from the pump suppliers, such as Industrial Injection, or better yet someone from Cummins. I just went with a replacement HO pump because I don't intend to push the horsepower limits. I also swore I wouldn't tap the pump wire on the new pump. So far I'm still good with that.

I had exactly the symptoms you describe. At the time, I had a Comp. I noticed that with the Comp removed, not just turned off, but completely detached, the symptoms were less, not gone, just less. So I sold the Comp and bought a Smarty. Everything was fine until I got about 50 miles from home, pulling my 5th wheel up a hill in 110* weather. Then I got serious dead-peddle. It was the dreaded code. I was able to pull the trailer home, but couldn't rev past 1800 rpm or build any boost. The next day, I drove all over town empty, couldn't catch a code or get it to misbehave. Replaced the pump anyway. About a year before, my lift pump went out. I replaced that with the AirDog, which has been flawless. But I still did some driving with a bad to failed lift pump, guess that wasn't good.

Anyway, double-check the SO pump on HO motor idea.

Do a search in the forums. From what I've read you could put a SO pump on a HO motor, but not a HO pump on a SO motor. Unless you change ecm.

Many threads that if the 0216 is intermittent it will get worse but you can still drive it but not stress it. Some drive it quite a long time before it finally quits.

If you drive it I would manage it's stress as much as I could ie slower rpms, cooler part of the day, not tow, keep tank as full as possible (not because of uncovering DrawStraw, but because of having as much cooler fuel available as you can), add lubricity every tank.

Good luck,

Bob Weis

I do not know about the HO on a SO or SO on a HO.

well, I think I'm gonna just go ahead and replace it. That means I wont have the spare cash for a performance module, but if I got one know and taped the wire, I'm sure that would mean certain death for the pump anyways if its acting up now, so I might as well do it. Does anyone know for certain if I can put a SO pump on my HO engine? I talked to a guy at our pump shop next door to work and he said he thought it was the other way around, but I'm pretty sure hes wrong. Besides, they don't rebuild the pumps there, someone else does it for them, so hes never even seen the inside of one... hes more of a 12v guy anyways:) The SO will push more fuel than an HO pump, correct?

Call Advanced Diesel Technology. Doug really knows his stuff & he won't steer you wrong. He gets the vp44's from II & they hold up well. SmokinDiesel.com Home or 304-864-3399.
