Viper Power Creates Fastest Ram Pickup Ever

??????????????

Absolutely amazing!! Here is a guy who spends $35 so he can log on here and tell this nest of mad BOMBers how good his stocker runs. Gotta love it. :p I'm afraid most of us don't really give a rat's hootus how good a stock light duty glow plugger runs. And no smoke? For goodness sake! Mine smokes like a forest fire when I get on it. :D Need more!!:-laf:-laf

Just one question? Joe

Joe,

" A rats hootus" ?????????? Does that have anything to do with the top secret cross breeding of rats and owls ? Answer me quick or I'll be up all night wonderin' bout' this one! :-laf

I used my brother's Duramax/Allison for a month, including a 2000 mile round trip to Alabama. I'd swap either or both of my RAMs for it in a New York minute! Unfortunately, he won't. It does everything better than my Dodges and more comfortably to boot! The only place my Dodge wins is my five speed gets marginally better fuel mileage. Of course my automatic Dodge's mileage really sucks. Cummins-powered Dodges are great trucks. But so are Isuzu-powered Chevys. As a matter of fact, International-powered Fords ain't half bad either!

OJ,

You're killin' me over here... ... ..... whoops... ..... that didn't come out right. Posts like that will start a war or a witch hunt... .....

 :D

amcintyre:

I hope you enjoy your TDR magazine subscription!! I bet you will be drivin a dodge in the future! $35 to straighten this out! I think you are crazy... ... . or maybe there is another reason you paid $35. Hmmmmm... . BTW, I drove a Duramax the other day. Of course, it was just a test drive, but the thing drove like a freakin' Cadilac. I saw one in a parking lot today, and I couldn't hardly tell it was a diesel(could not hear it!). Cummins and PSD can be heard from afar. Personally I like people to think a dump truck is in there driveway. :) Please tell us if you have any more cummins run-ins.

STOCK??????????? Who cares about stock? Ya, when I got my truck it was gutless (still pulled a trailer fairly well). It isn't now!! I will give you the fact that the Chevy is a very nice truck. I was a Chevy guy until I got this truck. Everything except the mileage is awesome with this truck. I love it. I too went and test-drove a D/A Chevy, and it was pretty nice. It was gutless compared to my truck though. Still very nice riding and quiet too. When I can get one for less than 20k, I might go for it. That is if the engine proves to be as reliable and long lasting as a Cummins. Anyone can see the logic in choosing an engine designed similarly to those found in heavy trucks. It is common for those engines to last more than one million miles. Why? They are inline engines. V-type engines have proportionally smaller bearings and shorter rods. The smaller bearings have greater pressure per square cm of bearing, the shorter rods push the pistons against the sides of the cylinders with more force. That is why almost every semi on the road today has a strait six powering it. But you are probably going to trade it in about 50k miles or so anyway. People who have enough money to buy a 45k dollar truck usually don't keep them very long. For people who need reliable long-lasting transportation that DOES NOT cost 45k (i. e. college students), the Dodge/Cummins is a wise choice. Mine currently has 142k miles on it, and it uses no oil, no bad noises, and runs (at partial throttle) exactly the same way it did when it was new with 0k mi. That is my logic, long lasting, relatively economic, reliable, wallet friendly. Which truck is the "best" is a matter of opinion. Which truck has the longest life potential? That is a matter of fact. It is the Dodge/Cummins. :D

P. S. - If I were in your shoes (I assume you have tons of $$), I would probably have a D/A in my driveway too. :D

As far as I am concerned . I visited this site prior to someone stating he went by me like i

I was dragging " A BOAT ANCHOR " I whould lurk and read and laugh at the bias statements . So up to now I said to my self SELF it is time to give the"" DURAMAX FAIR REPRESENTATION"" and spend $35. 00 for the entertainment value. It cost me more than that to take my wife daughter and myself to the movies for a couple of hours . This $35. 00 will last all year!!!!!!!!! Plus I will get a great FIRE STARTER IN THAT MAG lol offcourse after I read it.

OK the ALLISON is a perfect match for this setup. Shifts are firm and precise. A good way to explain the feel is when we use to put shift kits in trannys. The downshifting is nice on downgrade slows it down nice. Some have complained of high rpms I have not experienced that. The "tow HAUL" mode is more aggressive. If your (your that's funny like you guys drive duramaxes) unloaded driving around town engaged it acts like a standard you can control the shifts by rpm and when decelerating it will down shift quicker.

Downside it can be lets say Quirky some not wanted launches with light pressure on the go pedal. I got use to not doing that.

A little whiny (like my wife) . But all in all not bad.

I have not towed anything real heavy but have had some good payloads

OH ya on edit I forgot to add. A rear wheel power robber 60 h/p to be exact torque? So for all you racer fans 6 speed the way to go. Myself I wanted the easy way out. I'll get the Van Aaken box and 4" straight pipe to get it back to par.

Seeing as we're comparing diesels, I'm moving this thread to the General Diesel forum. Keep up the discussions and let's keep it friendly, thank you. . :)

I remember you from the Toyota Tundra site (Tundra Solutions). Your perspective is based on different values than most of the people that would own a Dodge Cummins diesel. I am not saying it is wrong just that it is "different". I like the Dodge CTD because it is Big, Rough, Tuff and "LOUD" and has proven reliablity. IMHO it is the "Best looking truck" with a Medium Heavy duty diesel engine that can be upgraded to beat any other diesel powered pickup on the road for any type of usage. I think the members of the TDR have proven that. I think there is a market for trucks like the Dura Maxx, but not in my garage. If I would of wanted a truck that rode like a Cadillac and was a guiet as a Lexus I would of kept my Tundra. Different strokes for different folks.

On the other hand, Big Toy, the main complaint my brother has about his Duramax is that it rides like a truck! It's a far cry from my Tundra and feels more like my 1st gen one-ton Dodge, especially when the rear wheels go over ANYTHING! He WOULD have been better off with a TRundra but was convinced he needed a full crew cab. He got a diesel because I have a diesel (two, actually), not because he needed one. And he wanted the quietest diesel available, which he got. But the 2002 that was delivered was not NEARLY as quiet as the 2001's we test drove. Seems Chevy might have got the idea that more diesel owners WANT to hear their engines than don't. What I absolutely love about his truck is not the style (I ilke both of my Dodges better), not the ride (I like my Tundra ten times better), not the engine (I'd rather have my Cummins because it's a 94 and therefor simpler), but the transmission (the only automatic I'd rather have than a stick), and the comfortable interior (much more comfortable than my Dodge or my Tundra). It would surprise me greatly if anyone who spent some time comparing the Duramax to their Dodges did not honestly, deep down inside, come to the same conclusions!

I have raced afew D maxs and have not been impressed as I am sure many of you have. I work with a guy who just bought a hd with a 8. 1, which are suppoes to be (drag race) faster than the D max, he talks smack like everyone else about his truck until the day we went to lunch in mine. It was bla bla bla until the temp was up and his head bounced off the back window, I heard a faint holy s*** and that was pretty much the end of that "I'll run ya for a tank of gas" crap.

I love this truck almost as much as my snowmobile.

Really I just didn't want to lose this thread.

amcintyre be patient. I remember James, the guy you raced, posting about going away for the weekend. I am sure he will surface soon.

Ted

BTW checkout this thread from the chevy world. Here I found and read this last night. I think a little propane would be fun in yur dmax.

bulldogs?

well, it's good to hear from ya amcintyre.....

why did ya let off when we hit 100? were we racing? two dulleys side by side doing 95 mph in a 65..... i'd call that racing. my buddy has a duramax. nice truck. he is always bashing dodge. you were the first one i had really raced so i went to the extreame with it. no hard feelings, it was fun:) also, i didn't know you were stock. the way ya have that rig all dressed up i would have thought ya spiced up the motor too! nice truck. now that you are a TDR member, you will have to come to the next dyno massdiesel sets up and put down some numbers... . james

Welcome amcintyre!

I shopped for trucks this summer, comparing Chevys and Dodges. It would have been a real tough choice if the prices were close. I got my truck (see signature) for almost $9,000 less than a Chevy D/A! Yes, I know the Allison vs 6-speed price contributed to the difference.

I have little worry about the longevity of the Isuzu engines if they are anything like the 4 cylinders in my Isuzu NPR trucks... . 14,000 Pound GVW truck with a whopping 135 (no typo) HP- these trucks have over 200,000 CITY miles with nothing but regular maintenance. They have Auto trannys, too... .

As many have said before... the introduction of the Duramax will push all other manufacturers to up the HP and offer better auto trannys in their trucks. We all will benefit down the road.
