Viper Power Creates Fastest Ram Pickup Ever

jsimpson:

Apparently ALL of the GM pickups are "governed" like

the Duramax. My brother-in-law has a 2001 Chevy

Z-71 4X4 Auto Pickup with the "new" 5. 4 V-8. About

a month ago were were coming back from Raleigh

on I-40 E. He came up alongside my truck and

motioned that he wanted to "run one. " So... .

we both punched it from about 75 MPH and as

you said at about 95-98 MPH his truck fell back

REAL fast. I kept accelerating until I got up to

about 115 MPH where I let off to wait for him.

(I really thought he had problems with the truck. )

Anyway, he caught back up to me, rolled his

window down and shouted out that the truck

felt like "it was running out of fuel" at that

speed. I wonder if the big 8. 1 V-8 is like that

too??

I understand it's corporate policy, in order to stave off lawsuits. It's really not a bad idea..... you've proved all you need to prove by the time you hit 97mph!:D

On the flip side, it may show manufacturer neglegence for allowing the vehicle to go 97mph. It should be restricted to max speed limit. LOL

this truck scats!!!!

After spending $500 on brakes, $600on tires, $500 on STeering $300 on # 6 plate, $370 on Valve body this week ( warranty finally ran out), I took my '97 2500 4x4 long bed into a friends alignment shop for an alignment today. First comment while telling me about his new chevy was that if my truck gets any heavier his air jacks won't be able to lift it. (weight 8500 with me and full of fuel <142 gal>). next comment was that my dodge must weigh a hole lot more than his chevy because his seemed a whole lot ighter on the rack this morning. Next comment was that Chrysler has to be the cheapest made vehicle built in America. Said they cost the owners a fortune to keep together and make people like him rich. Then told me that front in was real close, only one tierod end 1/2 turn off. Next he took it for a test drive. MAN YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN HIM WHEN HE CAME BACK! Keep in mind this guy likes fast cars , trucks and motorcycles. He says that truck will flat git! I think it would outrun my cherolet (I never thought I would ever hear him admit to something like that in the 35 years I've known Him). Then he says the way that thing goes you would never believe it weighs half of what it does. That motor doesn't even have sense enough to know there is a load behind it. :D :D :D Oo. Oo. Oo.

Sorry < I didn't realize I had clicked on reply instead of new topic. Still cant't believe that he thought my old truck could possibly out run his new chevy. My neighbor drove my pickup tonight after loading a load of wood and 107 gallons of diesel on it and he said he couldn't believe it would take off so fast. I have 3. 54 gears. His 2002 Stroker has 3. 73 gears he says. He thought difference was because his truck has 20K miles and not broken in and mine has 110K and loosened up. Still he said you would never believe it has 100,000 miles by driving it. :)

re: 8.1 top end speed

John_P, I own a 2001 Yukon XL 2500 4x4 with the

8. 1, and yes it tops out at 98MPH or so. But it

will keep up with my slightly bombed Ram

getting there! Bone stock, the 8. 1 in the heavy

Yukon XL, which is 900 lbs heavier than a 1/2 ton

Yukon XL due to the extra "beef", still does zero

to 60 in 8. 5 seconds. On ramps and passing are a

blast! It has 4. 10 gears which helps get to the

pump briskly since it gets 12 MPG average.

My Ram has the early "3 Light" Power Edge box, and

with a boost elbow I see 30 PSI on the gauge. That is all I have done to my Ram as of yet.

As for GM and the Top End issue overall, I was

minding my own business when a high-schooler was

doing the change-lane-boogie and tailgating every

car in his path, when he got next to me (he was

driving a new GMC 1500 gasser, 2wd, ext cab with

the step-side type bed), I nailed it, eaqualed his

speed until he started to accelerate, then I used

just enough throttle to stay next to him for a few

seconds, then floored it and left him behind. . he

hit 95 or so and got further back. . hehehhe. . I

must have been dreaming because street racing is

illegal, like Mcummings said. ;)

Thanks for the response on the 8. 1!

Heh, I meant no "disrespect" on that engine. Just

curious as to whether GM "restricts"that engine too!

My son and I race ATV's and alot of the other riders

who pull the big trailers are buying the new Chevy/

GMC's with that engine (8. 1) and report good

performance and power. I'm sure it is a "liability"

issue for GM on the "top end" issue but if I was

going to buy one, I would have to fix that!

Take care!
