Last nite on the way home, ye ol 5th gear nut decided to bite the big one! #ad
#ad
I took a chance & dropped it off @ Dodge this morning & they just might be able to get it out today. He didn't have to check stock, probably plenty of the kits in stock. #ad

Oh yea, 59k miles, some towing.

Money Sink - 96, 5 speed, TST #11/280 slid to 340 position + Injectors.

BCFAST,

Will do. The cost is going up. Just got off the phone with Dodge & they pulled the driveline, transfer case & started pulling the rear cover off & 1 of the bolts broke off in the case. #ad
#ad
They haven't got far enough in yet to see if the shaft will take the new gear or not.

Has anyone had the shaft be in poor enough shape where a new transmission is in order? Dodge says its a $3kilobuck item. Bummer of the largest order!

Forrest, is your truck 4 x 4? I know someone with a 5-speed available. A rebuilt 5-speed is about $1,300. New is $2,000. I think we need to think pick and pull #ad

Email me. Or better yet, call on Sat. AM.

Lee,

Thought of that, but it went last night, on the way back from the Bordertown bar. We told the wives we're off to Monday night football. #ad
I took the chance on a 7am dropoff for a fix next day, today, Friday. I hear you though. If it wasn't for the bolt shear off, I'd know if it's the big rotating banana. #ad

HVAC,

Yep, 4X4. Will do. I'll wait until the bad news hits. If it's just the quickie fix kit, all is well. If not, I'll be on the horn. Thanks hugely. #ad
I'd like to get ahold of the rebuilt with the aftermarket straight splined shaft. Ooh, I think I know who you're talking about.

Forrest:

After loosing 5th 3x the "new" gear was still loose on the shaft. Had 150K of hard use on, so I put in a brand new 4500. Do not pay a dine over $1950 for new NVG4500. Your dealship should help you on this as they will get plenty in labor to do the job. You can sell your core to a rebuild shop to save some coin. You can add the 99 and newer NVG if you want. Gets you the update shift tower. Either trans with a build date of 12/99 and newer has the same 5th gear "improved" assembly.

Don't be so quick to replace though. There are good options to fix 5th gear problems now on our older trans. With the lower mileage you have I bet your 1 - 4 gears are still like new.

willyslover,

Ah-Ha! This old brain guessed one right for a change. #ad

JJW-ND,

I was thinking about that, wondering if the new transmission has the 'non tapered' shaft. Real pisser to get a new transmission only to have the same problem. #ad

Yo Adam the drivetrain stressor. #ad
Here it comes.

You know, I was waiting for a $ milestone to happen & I was going to take it in just to have it done, before it happened. That $ milestone was Friday. Timing was not the best. #ad
Follow my lead, don't wait. #ad

I'm caravanning up to Scourge land on Sat the 11th with Gary & Frank. Gary is having transmission work done in Sourge town & I am taking the opportunity to have the Scourge team do some goodies. I'm glad I didn't get a few hundred miles into the trip up Hwy 5, only to loose 5th. #ad

If an nv4500 needed to be replaced would it be possible to replace it with the six speed.

I noticed a couple of you are from Reno any chance you know someone who needs a camper shell? I have a post in the classifieds check it out. Thanks in advance...

I have an auto myself, so I have a different set of worries, but... ...
It seems to me this should have been fixed from the factory long ago #ad
This problem hasn't exactly been a mystery or anything #ad
I mean, I don't see Ford 5 speeds loosing their nuts #ad
so why does DC keep puting these five speeds in with a KNOWN defect?!

95 2500 SLT Laramie 3. 54, automatic,Herculiner bed liner, JVC cd out of factory infinity system, southwest grill gaurd (a favorite amongst the deer population), K&N, AFC adjusted, dual straight exhaust out of "gutless" cat, Geno's dual EGT/boost gauge, TST #6 plate slid all the way forward, AFC housing slid all the way forward, silencer ring removed

I was under the impression that this is a Dodge only problem. The GM has a different shaft. Is it possible to get that version of transmission to use in the trucks as oppossed to the Dodge version?

Well, the money sink should be released tomorrow. No new transmission this time, just the 5th gear kit. #ad
#ad
Now I've got time to do the new 5th gear shaft mod & be done with this reacurring pain in the privates.

Dodge didn't have the kit in stock, so it'll be ready tomorrow. The total damage is around $800. 00 according to the svc agent today. Yours truly will be scrutinizing the details tomorrow. That bolt breaking off in the transmission housing didn't help the cause.

Well, grab em. $868. 08

$355 in labor, 5 hrs.
$478 in parts, including $51 or so in a gasket & transmission fluid.

Now, how long until it goes again?

GM uses a pressed on sleeve behind the 5th gear, and the sleeve butts against the companion flange which bolts to the shaft. The torque and vibrations of the Cummins are a good part of the reason for the 5th gear problem.

Standard Transmission of Fort Worth TX (800-783-8726) offers a reman NV4500 with their fully splined mainshaft to permanently fix the 5th gear problem. Their excellent 5th gear nut is harder than the Mopar and uses Allen setscrews with brass inserts to contact the shaft's threads. I believe the price is around $1700 complete. They sell a gallon of the Castrol Syntorq for $56. Seems a much better value, than paying over $800 for just a patch job (time constraints permitting).
I patched my NV4500 with the Mopar nut package, reusing the old 5th gear since the splines on the shaft were at least as worn as those on the gear anyway. I have under $100 in the job, plus a favor trade with the dealership tech. It took us a couple hours to do the job.
