I have been dogging everybody about the carb rule in California and this is what I have found out. the California auto sellers have a rule in place (I don't know who got paid off in this case) and they use this rule to increase the money of the auto to almost and above the $2,000. 00 mark. All the engines are the same that are being produced for the dodge ram by cummins and they all have the same carb but in california it comes down to the law that the lobiests had passed for the california dealers this law states that no vehicle that is not carb for california cannot come into california without the 7500 mile limit on the vehicle. Only California dealers and border state dealers have the right to order the vehicle with the carb stamp for california. On the driver side of the cummins engine around the top of the head you will find a data plate with the info of the engine. Towards the back of this plate you will find a set of boxes the one that says CARB should have the two boxes stamped under it. One is the designator for the cat,NOX and should have a number such as 2. 4 or 3. 0. The other box is the PM and should have a number such as 0. 10. If these numbers fall under the FED or FEL this vehicle is not CAL CARB legal and needs 7500 miles before it can be regestered in california. Also the vehicles reg id number should show a YCF when run. All this due to a piece of paper what a scam on the people in california.

Hey Bellyscraper,

Unfortunately it matches what I've found (see Screwed in California thread). I think there are enough CA folks that are ready to order trucks that we can leverage that into some buying power in a CA or border state dealer. I'm following up on a lead in Vegas today and heard about another dealer in Carson City from Butch at Dishman Dodge. I would like to get another truck ordered in the next week. Anybody know any dealers in CA, NV, AZ, or OR that will treat us like tomeygun or Butch? (3% below invoice/ $1100 below invoice).

Thanks everyone!

Kevin

I got my truck there Lilly is good to work with. She made ordering and buying nice. She should be able to come to or under invoice.

Limiting CA certification to CA and border states appears to be a manufacturer option. Ford, Dodge, Chevy all have ordering options for CA certification.

However this is not the case for BMW, Honda, Jaguar. I know it has been possible to buy BMW's from any dealer in the US and bring in to CA without problems.

DC is not consistent, either. Jeep has only a 50-state certification.

I don't believe one should point the finger at CARB. It apears to be a restraint of trade arrangement between CA dealers and DC / Ford / GM. Its amazing they get away with this.

Sorry guys, I fail to see where we are getting screwed. If you visit any of the Internet websites that allow you to "build" a truck you'll notice there's no difference in the price of the truck when choosing the emissions option. The 50 states emissions code is exactly the same price of the California emissions code (which just so happens to be zero).

Bringing a non-California version into the state isn't that difficult. After the truck has 7,500 miles on it the DMV will register it but be prepared to pay the "use tax" which will be the sales tax rate for the county you live in. The tax is based on market value of the vehicle. My county charges 7. 5%.

I test drove a new 600/325 today, there's nothing on the window sticker that would lead me to believe the California emissions adds to the bottom line.

Finding a dealer that will sell the truck at a price you feel comfortable with has nothing to do with California emissions requirements.

FWIW: I bought my '02 from Redwood City Dodge and paid almost $3,000 below invoice. I've always told people to get up and walk out of the dealership if they don't feel comfortable with what the salesman is offering.

Your original post was "The truth about CARB", still waiting to see the connection between negotiated selling price of the vehicle and the California Air Resources Board.
