RifleSmith,

Some of the guys around here are running the Redline gear lube in their Tcases. Redline recommends it over the ATF in many cases. Everyone likes it so far. More protection at higher temps.

Engine : Rotella, Delo, or PB 15/40 of course changed 2000 miles or less

Coolant: Fleetguard Extended drain stuff. (its blue like washer fluid)

Axles: Lubrication Engineers

Tcase: Cheap dexron stuff changed all the time

NV4500: Syntorq changed every 25K

Don~

Riflesmith.

I dumped the ATF as soon as possible and switched to the gear lube. But I would only use a synthetic due to pour points in the winter time. My other 4X4's with a 205 and 203 t-case used gear lube. Why the switch to ATF? Reason I was told was less resistance which = better fuel mileage. ATF is more fluid for hydraulic type applications. I know there is lubrication properties in ATF, but not as good as gear lube. I also used it in my Dakota to 135K miles when sold, and currently in my wife's 2000 Grand Cherokee. I personally like the results. Cleaner when changed, shifts in and out smoother, feels tighter.

B KIRK, I tried the same idea years ago in my NP208 (NP = New Process... which is now NV, or New Venture Gear) after a tip in Four Wheeler Magazine. At the time I used HPS (High Performance Synthetics... now a defunct company) 75W80W (?) 100% synthetic gear lubricant. This stuff was VERY thin, about the consistency of ATF. It seemed to work well for a while, that is, until my first long freeway trip. After starting my trip, 10-20 miles from home, I noticed quite a bit of smoke trailing my GMC (full size) Jimmy.  After I pulled off onto the shoulder I discovered that the HPS had blown out past the transfer case output shaft seal as well as out the vent cap. Hmmm. Needless to say, after checking the fluid level in my NP208, I slowly drove home where I drained the HPS and replaced it with synthetic ATF before REstarting my trip. BTW, the transfer case was BRAND NEW (not rebuilt).

I have been giving serious thought to using either Red Line SuperLight ShockProof gear lubricant or possibly their MTL in the transfer case (NV241HD in my case) when I add my (tricked out :D ) Fast Cooler.
