Thanks, seems like 18 ft. lbs. is a pretty common figure on this engine.
 
Thermostat housing bolts @ the water outlet pipe are tiny little guys!!

At the factory (where I work)they are torqued to 10nm at the most.

18 foot lbs will snap the heads right off those bolts.

Justin all I can tell you is the Service Manual reads 24 N-m (18 ft. lbs)

Generally speaking, most 10mm headed bolts at the factory are torqued to 18 ft lbs, 24 nm, some less.

But 8mm headed bolts, none that I can recall are torqued over 12nm.

I just changed mine and thought the torque 18ft/lb was too high too. I did get them that tight, but I was not liking the feeling and what would happen if I twisted one off.

Ok from our torque spec board at work.

8mm bolt head, 12 Newton Meter torque value.

I hate to argue, but I make and repair these engines for a livng at Cummins Midrange Engine Plant Pit bull.



I have found errors in some of our service manuals.

Justin, glad you are here to keep things straight. All I did was quote from this $100 plus service manual I bought that must have the wrong information in it. Since that is what it says on the board at the plant where the engine is made it must be right. Could you check and see what torque the oil pan bolt is suppose to be. That is the one I remove all of the time and now I don't trust my Service Manual.

I keep a copy of our torque value board here at the computer, I just had to dig through a mess to find it!!



The oil pan bolt 10mm head is 24nm/18ft lbs ("most" 10mm heads are 24nm/18ft lbs)



No big deal, its probably difficult to get every technical listing for every engine and vehicle on paper correctly!

trans adapter 15mm 77nm

water inlet housing 13mm 43nm

water inlet housing 15mm 77nm

lift pump 10mm 24nm

belt tens 13mm 43nm

injector clamp 8mm 10nm (I put 11nm on used bolts)

vac pump 15mm 77nm

flex plate 18mm 137nm

exh man 13mm 43nm

flywheel 18mm 137nm

vib damper 15mm 125nm

Injector lines @pump 24nm

Injector lines 19mm 24nm

Injector line @head 19mm 40nm

f. i. p. nut 15mm 24nm

thermostat 8mm 12nm

valve cover 24nm (old and new bolt)

rear lift bracket 15mm 77nm

starter 10mm 12 point 43nm

oil pump 13mm 24nm

turbo nut 15mm 43nm

lube cooler 10mm 24nm

oil pan 10mm 24nm

gear cover 10mm 24nm

cam thrust plate 13mm 24nm

front lift bracket 43nm

Also brass threaded sensors are generally 8-11nm

Any misstatements are unintentional!

Factory is 60nm on the Oil drain plug.

That is a little high in my opinion, I usually put mine on about 50nm.

I have seen some of the oil drain plugs crack when over torqued.

Did the coolant/thermostat change yesterday and sure enough the teeny bolts snapped and stripped at the specified torque of 24 NM. The bolts were aluminum so the replacement bolts went in without a problem at 8 NM. The front of the manual makes reference to 7 or 8 NM of torque for the teeny (8 mm) bolts but the section in the manual states 24 NM. Was an interesting lesson in what feels reasonable with a 1/4 inch drive and what the manual tells you to do with a 3/8 inch torque wrench. The above torques are getting printed out for future reference.
