Well I will just post a link to some pics. I took it to a local performance machine shop, who said they do o-ringing all the time. Well Look at what they did. The funny thing is that the owner said it would be just fine.

It was a brand new head from cummins.

alright your ASSSSS... suggest you "LET" the owner buy you another brand new head

??? did you match the "dual rings" up to what ever type of gasket your using ???

are you going with a copper or stock type. . either way ther are now dual escape paths for pressure to go

yeah, there is a lot of the second groove showing in the cylinder and outside the firering. I am using the . 020 over head gasket.

O-ringing

Adam, be sure and shim the injectors to compensate for the lower height in relation to the pistons. Otherwise the spray pattern will be off. I'm assuming it's going to take some grinding to get rid of those grooves.

When using a boring bar to cut O-rings the hard part is locating center of each cylinder. The tool I use employs a register plate that aligns to the head using the dowels. Once it's bolted to the head your perfectly centered on all six barrels.

 Just use a bit of JB weld and some high temp RTV. it will be OK.

Ask him if where to find the multi ring Orings at, and then you will put it on. But they need to fit all of the grooves. If he cant find the right O rings, chew him a new one and have him buy a new head. Would there be enough meat in the head for as much heck as you are gonna give it w/o it cracking?

I also like the rusty fingerprints.

Mill it and send it to Piers, or call them about doing it all! Ground rate for me through Fedex was $65. 00 for a head $22. 00 for a pump!

I wouldn't recommend letting them mill the head... . You bought a new head, let them work on it. If you let them "fix" your head it's not new anymore. If you ever have the head warp due to Bombing (like that will happen) you will have no where to go but to... . you guessed it... buy another head. You wanted O-rings, not a milled head.

New Head

You would be crazy to not make them buy you a new head, they scwered it up and you shouldnt have to pay for there mistake, you wanted a new head not a milled head. Good Luck

Make them eat it - they "F'd" it up.

You had a new head - and you better have a new head that is o-ringed when you are done. Not some milled down POS.

Matt

How deep are the grooves? In general, if you mill the head you can get into valve/piston clearance problems. If you sink the valves, airflow will suffer a lot.

I agree with JoshPeters. You bought a new head, after they mill it, it won't be new anymore. And like Joe said. You could and probably will run in to trouble. Make them buy you a new head!

Ditto new head

They made you a problem and propose to remedy it by making you many more problems.

Read it again:

Shim the injectors.

Valve clearance.

Head warping... ... ...

New Head

There are no options for the machine shop, they should eat this job,and buy you a new head. Then I would take the head and send it to a shop capable of doing the work properly. I didnt want any problems with mine,so when I o ringed, I drove my truck to Advanced Diesel Technology, where Doug,Andy, and Nathan did a top notch job of O ringing and buttoning it up. BTW the tool they used sounds exactly like the one Nowel uses,it looks to be a very expensive tool, but I couldnt see doing it any other way. I hjope you get this resolved to your satisfaction.

Jim,

You need to ask Piers about when I sent my head to them..... There was a little mixup at the dealer and lets just say if you Fed-Ex overnight to Western Canada it runs over $400!

Doug

New Head, New Head!!!!!!

Sorry. . for the bum job, I would settle for nothing less then a New Head!!! I'm fortunate mine was done properly, with someone I could trust. . Nowel & Gary, you did do it right, right?? :D

Steve

Ah Ah ... ya sure Steve that was so long ago I forgot ... LOL

;) . . any issues . . it was Nowel's fault He He

with the tool Nowel [HVAC] has it's a piece O cake

Wont milling the head raise the compression? It did on gassers but we prolly dont need a lot more compression I bet. Milling and related problems sound like a lot future grief waiting to happen.

Good Luck
