Duramax

Great Clean Puzzle......

Yeah the new motor that dodge has come out with is awesome from what I heard 6. 1 Hemi is said to smoke the older motor so yeah if they put the 6. 1 into the trucks then they will rock . from what i heard the charger with the 6. 1 is a Beast with a 6 speed transmission :)

F-150 toadstool

I am not pro Toyota, they probably make a decent truck though, but the hemi is the just about the weakest gas engine you can get right now in a pickup, they are way over rated by the factory, they usually dyno around 260hp at the wheels. I hope Dodge comes out with a decent gas engine at some point I like the rest of the HD truck.

Drive an new F-150 sometime,now that's a toad.

I've checked them out and I have to say, if they offer a diesel option in the future, it would be tough not to like them. The gas engine has loads of "seat of the pants" power, but it just doesn't feel like it would be at home (or comfortable) with 10k behind it. GM definitely has the market on gassers in trucks. I'd say keep what you have.

Junk?

The guy that said Toyoda is junk needs to get out of his cave. I have owned 3 Dodge Cummins and they are a good truck. I had the pleasure of driving the new Tundra and the fact is there is no 5/8 ton truck out there that compares. Fact: The Big Three are sending our jobs to China. Fact: Toyoda is hiring American workers and building plants here FOR A REASON. We know how to build cars and trucks. Fact: Big Three American part content is less than 30%. Fact Toyoda within 3 years will be selling 3/4 and 1 ton trucks with CAT diesels. Yea I know you think this guy is a bsing us. Sorry this is a fact. A little hint NASCAR what cars have CAT on the hoods. How do I know this, I supply OEMs with manufactured parts for over 30 years. So all you guys that want to knock Toyoda need to search the facts. Buy American and put our people to work but search the facts to determine what Company is really American.

At max GVW squeeze a Cummins throttle and immediately get good response under any driving condition with fuel mileage to other engine can match. That's what you'll be giving up.

Hows that a fact? Its merely speculation at this point, and from what I hear, CAT doesnt have an engine for a 3/4-1ton truck, or even that theyre interested. You cant assume that because CAT sponsors a Toyota car in NASCAR that there will be a CAT in the Tundra. Heres a FACT for ya, CAT was sponsoring a Dodge in NASCAR before the Toyota, wheres the CAT in Dodges?? There isnt one...

Here's another CAT fact: It's smaller engines are mostly CAT badged Perkins motors.

As for buying a Toyota versus a Diesel Dodge, I'd stick with the Diesel Dodge. In 31,000 miles I've put on it, (bought it with 29K on it) all I've had to do above and beyond normal maintenance was have the rear u-joints replaced, and they were under the Limited Powertrain Warranty. Only cost me $100, which is less than the cost of one j-joint. My truck is getting in excess of 21 MPG on summer grade B2 Biodiesel blend, hand calculated, mixed driving. Average DF2 price is within $0. 20 either way of regular unleaded gas on average. I don't know what engine-drivetrain combination Chevy is puting in their 1/2 tons to claim 22 MPG, but I doubt it will do what my truck will do in any circumstance.

Don't know about the new Tundras, but they manufacture them near my hometown. Princeton, IN is just 45 minutes from my hometown, and about 30 minutes from Evansville. The other plant is in San Antonio, TX. One of my friends works at the Princeton plant, hears the SA plant is having employee problems, but it sounded more like an employee mentality problem than an employee relations problem. He also said Toyota is starting to show it's ugly side, though. Things aren't as "hunky dory" as Toyota corporate wants the public to believe. My friend has worked there about 10 years and has never owned a Toyota. Let's just say he likes my truck.

Speaking on fuel mileage only, the 4. 8L V8, 4-speed auto, 3. 42 gear combo in our '05 Silverado was rated 16-20 on the window sticker and gets just over 22 mpg on the highway hand calculated. Now it will not get out of it's own way empty let along towing or hauling something. But as a general driver, it's OK.

Not sure of the year, about a 04 maybe? But me and my brother took his 1/2ton Silverado Z71 to CO a few weeks back and his best MPG was 23, hand calculated for a few tanks across eastern CO and KS. Surprised the heck out of me, though normally he gets 15ish here around STL. For a gas truck I'd go Chevy all the way, but for real power, Cummins, and whatever it goes in...

Oh, and his has the 5. 3 V8 auto transmission... .

Has he had any front end troubles with the '04 Chevy? I can't seem to keep intermediate steering shafts and upper ball joints in our '05..... which would be my only complaint about the overall truck.

My close friend has a tundra and loves it. However, it is not so good towing. Let's face it. A gasser truck is fine runing single, mostly cheaper. But if you are gong to tow anything, even once in a while - DIESEL is the only way to go. and you already know Cummins is THE duesel.

I think you just want something new, right?

Have fun, Mike

Okay, real world towing experience just in, my business partner (07 Tundra 4x4, 5. 7 V8, SB) just towed a twenty foot trailer with a boat about 6k, he said he was losing speed going uphill. He had to downshift just to maintain like 55mph, his excuse was the extra drag and wind resistance. I towed a trailer with 4 quads and loaded with a bunch of gear and tools etc. up the same grade, it probably only weighed around 4k but I couldn't even feel it.

Keep in mind that a boat is bound to have less aero drag than a toy hauler. No mid-size V-8, Japanese or otherwise, is going to tow like a diesel. Even the GM 8. 1 I had could not hold a candle to my CTD, and got 10 MPG tops... empty.

I had a 1983 dodge w-350 crewcab and a 1994 toyota land cruiser (fj-80) and I sold both of them and bought a 2007 dodge 2500 4wd CC with a cummins and 6sp. the land cruiser had 212hp and 275 ft/lbs of torque, and weighed 5000 lbs. and was lucky to get 10mpg. Interesting enough, the 83 dodge got the same MPG. I'm averaging 22mpg in my dodge for a truck that weighs 2000lbs more than the landcruiser and has more rear seat legroom.

Oh yea, I paid $40,000(listed for $44000. 00) for the land cruiser in 1994 and $35000. 00 for my 07 dodge. YMMV

I was heading back to Indy on SR 37, near Bloomington. I see a GM 2500 towing a speedboat on trailer coming up in my RVM. I'm thinking, OK DMax. Nope, dude's driving a gasser. Handling it quite nicely, but all I could think was, go ahead and pass. You're buying the fuel. Oh, and I'm sure I could tow his boat, AND the truck, too, and use no more fuel than what his rig would use unloaded.

Just to say, the Tundra has just as much or more US content (domestic made parts) than other Former Big three. Tundras are made in Indianna and Texas by local hard working Americans. The majority of the design and development was done by the American design branch TTC. Toyota Builds most of its US made vehicle engines here, either in Alabama, West Virginia, or Kentucky. A good portion of the car Trannies are built in WVA.

I can pretty much assure you that CAT won't go in the Tundra. CAT was on the #22 nascar well before toyota threw its hat into stockcars (Go David Blaney!). Since the 3/4 and 1 ton tundra has been put on hold there is no "public" info on what the Diesel will be, or when, but stop and think for a minute. Toyota owns Hino, large manufactuer of medium duty trucks and engines, as well as a portion or Fuji Heavy industries which is Isuzu, ie Duramax (don't count on the DMax name to go into Toyota though)

As far as Tundra over Dodge, Gas to Diesel I go Mopar all day long (Love my CTD), but Gas to Gas for light duty application, the Tundra will more than hold its own.

For the patriotic feelings that may go along with buying a truck, I can completely understand. Before CTD I was a bowtie guy, but when I'm paying that much of my hard earned money, I'm going to consider all my options and get what best suits my needs and pocket book.

Between 1998 and May of this year, money spent on a Dodge didn't stay here either. Daimler - look into it. Cerberus is headqartered in NYC, but it is a Limited Partnership. Hard to tell exactly where that money goes...

For us, the CrewMax 4x4 is the way to go for the Wife's new rig. Great kid hauler, better ride, stability control, etc... Besides, when I need to drag something heavy, I use the 98. 5 24V.

$8k cheaper than a Megacab 4x4 6. 7L with 1. 9% APR vs. 7. 0%. Gettin' rid of a 9 MPG 460ci ... PRICELESS.

I should have done the 5. 9L 2007 Megacab, but re-modeling the house set us back a year. I really don't want to be Cummins' guinea pig on a new engine, and I'd rather not light up my pasture when the thing decides to regen.
