Here I am

This is interesting.......04.5 miss

Sorry guys, I guess that I goofed again!!!

For everyone that is experiencing a miss when driving the new 04. 5 diesel, take a look at your cell phone or your radio equipment.

I have had a problem that absolutely was driving everyone nuts, after repeated trips to dealerland with nothing ever found, I attached a code reader to the truck while driving. Everytime the cell phone or the sideband radio was tripped to broadcast, the computer started throwing errors. Soon the engine was missing, and would continue to do so until I shut down and restarted.

I have not traced which wiring harness or processor is catching the RF, but I am hot on the trail looking and wrapping everything with copper mesh and grounding it to the common ground. In the mean time I took my linear amp off the sideband and got back down to legal power, and went to an external cellular antenna. No more problems.

I also noticed this problem on 03's and 04's with the HO package. When over-the-road truckers with linear amps would key up next to me, the engine would stumble. Sometimes, they would actually put the engine in to creep mode and I would have to pull over and restart.

Along the same lines, I notice that when I'm wearing my heart monitor (which works on RF), it reads crazy heartrates while the truck is running.

I know why this happens.

let me take a guess here; and bet that you guys have the "Grey Century Security" keys. I recently read that these things work like a "Mobile speed pass" (gas station that allows you to wave a key chain to pay for gas) (i. e. the keys rely on a small RF transmitter in them) well I read that a speed pass could cause interference with the operation of the truck, since its on your key chain close to the transmitting key.

So long story short, if there is RF interference between the key and the receiver in the steering column, then that could put the truck into limp mode or possibly cause it to shutdown all together if the interference is bad enough because the computer will think that the truck will be stolen..... just my 2 cents worth

You may already know this but... ... . your monitor is picking up electrical signals (just like electrical impulses from the heart) from the truck and will happen with any vehicle. I am a firefighter and we have to know what is considered "artifact" and real when reading our monitors, which are extremly sensitive. They can pick up a lot of crap in the back of an ambulance.

That is crazy about these trucks picking this stuff up. And I thought it was annoying when my cell phone interfered with my radio... ...

I don't have any kind of remote keyless device. KIseminger, I just found it interesting that my truck does this to my monitor, but neither my previous gas-powered Ranger nor my wife's Civic do it. :)

 I only hope if I'm ever in an ambulance the EMTs are "good" at separating noise from signal! I'd hate to get shocked with them paddles by accident!

(p. s. - in case you don't hear it enough, thanks for being a fireman). :)

i used to have this problem with 18 wheelers it would miss up to around 1000 or 1400 rpm when radio was keyed up and sitting still it would add milles to the odometer. i had an 800 watt booster

Actually this is an occurence seen on many electronically controlled watercraft with non-shielded wiring. It seems whenever the SSB is keyed,or the windlass is operated, (or other high current items)- little gremlins of varying degrees seem to present themselves. The most common I have seen is the throttle (or shift) potentiometer receiving a voltage change. Now with the advent of Can-Bus on many makes- it could happen across virtually any component in the "stream". You did mention diagnostic codes were set. I would start there. Another step would be a scan tool being watched at the time the accessory is triggered. See what changes. I am not familar with Dodges diagnostic function. . I am sure someone in here is, but the electronic engines I am familiar with have the ability to not only view specific component readings, but also have circuitry "breakout" ability. This is where you can usually catch the gremlins that invade certain circuits. Before you do throw in the towel- check the obvious- remember when you add the extra load of any component on the charging system (the same system that provides voltage to the ECM, components, etc). . make sure that system is right. Battery, terminals, cabling, alternator & belt, etc etc is where it all begins. Best of luck-

This whole issue is why airplane stuff is so expensive compared to consumer electronics. Would you want the engines in a 777 to stumble if someone turned on their cell phone?

Is your radio amplifier power tied in directly at the battery. In some cases interference is not directly from rf radiated power but from rf getting into the power supply system through the DC power lines.

There are two basic ways to trouble shoot this. one way is to provide amplifier power (for test purpose) from an auxillary battery and see it that fixes the problem. The second is to substitute a 50 ohm dummy load in place of your antenna for a test. This should point to the culprit. If DC line induced, a ferrite core on the line can be a big help. If radiated power is the fault, your shielding changes,or perhaps a different antenna location are possibilities.

The owners manual that came with my truck. ;)

the section that either talks about securing the truck or starting the truck I dont recall off hand.
