The reason for the season and Merry Christmas

A soldiers Christmas

Your indignation is justified. Very few charities manage the funds they receive in an equitable manner. I use to look up the percentage of overhead, or to put it another way, how much of every dollar donated actually was spent where intended before I donated. The salaries most of the executives receive are scandalous. Google the ASPCA, Habitat for Humanity, Red Cross, etc. and I think you will find it shocking. The yahoos who sit on the Boards of these organizations meet a couple of times during the year and get paid outrageous salaries, and they don't eat club sandwiches when they gather. Do a background check on the founder of Wounded Warriors.

Today, I tithe to the church and depend on them to filter out the sludge.

There are very few charities that call you on the phone at night that give much if any money to the intended. I only give to the salvation army anymore. The ones that really get me are the ones that say they are trying to help the "guys" or that they want to buy equipment for the cops or fire dept.

Keep your charity money close to home. I can almost guarantee you that the money will be much more efficiently spent than with a national or large scale charity.

One of my friend's mother was raised by the Salvation Army. He is really big on them, so I always put money in the red pot this time of the year. He serves on their local BofD, I do not believe that he receives anything for doing that.

There are some good charities out there but you really need to do your research if you expect your funds to reach the right recipients. The Salvation Army is a good one.

Just adding a little fuel to the fire!

If you remember my thread about the flooding we had here in 2016, the Red Cross made a complete fool out of many people here that lost everything.

Here was my quote from 2016

"Huge black eye for the American Red Cross in our community. Over the last week, the Red Cross, along with local charities have been providing food, clothing, and cleaning supplies to local residents. Today, I wittnessed Red Cross workers coming back to residents that they had donated to, demanding return of the items or financial compensation back to the Red Cross. Apparently, after processing their claims, the Red Cross determined that they didn't meet the financial eligibility requirements to receive Red Cross service. I wittnessed one "collection agent" first hand, got his name, and have already reported this to our state officials.

Pretty rotten for a "charity" to be asking for money back from people it is "serving". They will never get another dime from me. I didn't realize that a families income made it better when your house and most of your belongings are destroyed."

The Red Cross will not get another donation from me or my family after what we witnessed first hand here in our area.

Anyone interested in donating to charities would do well to check any of several charity rating sites. I like charitywatch.org

My wife watches too much) tv and wanted to donate to wounded warrior project and I checked them out we elected to instead help fisherhouse.org. Having in our family and knowing many veterans we have first hand knowledge of the difficulties faced by families desiring to be close to their loved ones while they endure days or weeks or more of treatment.

I’m a member of the local sheriffs posse. I donate time and very little money. We are 100% none proffit. We pay dues to cover shirts n jackets, the rest is donations and is turned over in one way or another.

I am convinced that many of these charities start out with good and noble purposes. Unfortunately, with an abundance of income with very few checks and balances, they attract graft, corruption, and downright theft. The extravagant lifestyle enjoyed by those employed by some of these organizations in my opinion is criminal. They surround and mask their activities by having the names and participation of good respectable people associated with their well publicized activities; and, in some cases, contributions by individuals and corporations are misdirected and unaccounted for because the donors have already taken their tax deduction and could care less.

Ouch! For some strange reason I won't mention the name of that charity other than to say that the company I worked for at one time gave materials valued at $5 million per year worldwide to what they thought was a splendid endeavor, when in actuality, I watched a portion of it go out the door to the benefit of the charities' employees.

Killer, I share your experience; I was a member for ten years. We donated 500-600 hours per year per member and bore our own expenses while giving back to the community in both time and money. It was one of the most satisfying experiences of my life.

This a great thread, thanks for posting that infographic JR. Very useful information! I hope there is a special place in Hades for people that scam under the banner of charity.

A lot of your jocks, entertainers, actors set up non profit orgs so they don't have to pay taxes (but I mite be wrong).
I believe a non profit only has use 10 or 20 % of the donations for charitable causes the rest can be used for administration wages.
Now the Gates and Buffet do their own thing but they got quite a few of their own kind to donate $$$$$ to charities of their choice. A few started their own. And most of them don't get a pay check they are trying to help those that need it. Not be political but look at the Clintons. Broke when they left The Office. Started a charity now they have 100 million in their personal bank account.

I pretty sure that the family that started wounded warrior were doing the right thing. Then they hired someone to run it then it started to go down hill. I thought the family (son) took it over sgain. But that was quite a few years ago.
