QUICK HELP!! Chevy AL Rims/tires

you want the rim to be 70% to 90% of the tire width. 245/25. 4=inches then take 6"/width of tire should fall between . 7 and . 9. I get . 62. 6. 5" rim would be better or run 225's.

If you go by the book, that's what they say but my 19. 5's will break 150K miles & that's plenty from where I come from & they'll haul way more than the truck is capable of hauling.

I had 225's on there when I first put them on the truck but they looked so stupid I took them off & switched them before even driving it. They looked like the skinny tall tires they use on the railway trucks! LOL.

If I could have gotten 6. 5" or 7" rims I may have but Rickson wasn't an option for me... too much money to ship them across the country.

The 6" rims will safely fit a 245. Lots of room between the tires even with 8000lbs loaded in the bed of my truck.

That's my story & I'm telling you from experience. :D

Marty,

Thanks for the info. I had one of my buddies put some tires on my truck while I was out of the country. I just got back on Jan. 4 and these are the pictures he sent me when he made the swap. I am very pleased with these tires so far, they are the Hankook DHO1 245/70/R19. 5's

Nice looking Camp!!!

Someone on DTR mentioned something about wheel clamps. What on earth are these?

EDIT: I see you bored them out to 4. 773 - how tolerant can this be ... ?

How much will this cost if I have a shop do it?

What is a source for Accuride wheels at a decent price?

What are you guys paying for Hankooks. I cannot seem to get below $215/tire regardless for a 225 70 19. 5? I was looking at the AH06. Pavement pounder here... .

Do you guys carry a spare?

Thanks. I have no idea what the wheel clamps are that they might be referencing. I bought my wheels from a junk yard so, I don't know the best source for getting Accuride's. I did find that one of my wheels is bent and has 0. 010" of run out on it after I did all the machining and powdercoating. Guess that is what I get for not checking first. It causes a slight vibration at about 65 mph on the speedo, which is now 5. 1% slow, so I called Rickson and ordered another wheel. They send it with the correct pilot and can powdercoat to just about any color you want. That will give me a spare since I will just buy another tire for the new rim and take the bent one as my spare.

Since I just sent one of my buddies a check to have my wheels put on while I was gone, I don't remember exactly what he paid for them. Seems like the Hankook's were about $235/ea at Discount Tire. The bill of sale is in my truck but, I am too lazy to walk out to our parking lot here at work right now. I went with the DH01's because of the amount of snow I encounter in the mountains out here as well as the fact that with my race team, I am continually dragging my 40' enclosed trailer across the desert somewhere to get to an event site. The stock grass cutter tires that were on this truck almost got me stuck in Moab last year in a canyon we had to go down in and I had to unload the trailer to get out of it.

I went up skiing for the weekend my first weekend back in the states. I was impressed with how well the DHO1's did in the snow. It was snowing like heck on Sunday coming home and they did very well.

As for the pilot, these wheels are hub centers. There is a little tolerance on that and you need to leave room for powdercoat thickness but, you certainly wouldn't want to over bore them. I'm no machinist so, I hate to start quoting number. Hopefully someone a little more experienced will jump in wiht that answer. If not, I will ask my buddy that did the machining for me and see what his thoughts are. I know we discussed it the day we were doing the machine work but, don't remember what his answer was.

I have no idea what it would cost to have a machine shop do it, mine were done in a state of the art Biomedical machine shop that a friend runs :D

Thanks... I would prefer to find a source for these otherwise. Rickson is $193 per wheel. I see other models of this Accuride wheel going on eBay for $30. X6 is $1000 difference... . I will make some calls and see what I can find...

Hey, you saying I'm old? :{

Your sig tells me your first truck was two years before I was born.

The truck wasn't black but the movie was very dark. That's a classic movie.

:-laf That movie was filmed out behind where I now live. Between palmdale and Santa Clarita California, that is when it was country out here now it's all built up.

Patrick,

Most large truck tire dealers have access to Accuride wheels. Huge company & they won't sell to us small guys. The cheapest I found them was at Les Shwabb tire here on the West Coast & after some trickery, I got them down to around $118/rim. I told them we had a fleet of 80 trucks we needed these rims for but were going to buy one set to see how they worked out. Surprising how fast they get back to you when they think they might be able to sell 320 rims & tires. :-laf

That sounds reasonable. If I could find them at that price I'd be happy to pick them up, or even a little more... Alas we don't have Les Schwabb here. The best price I have gotten is $150 per wheel. That is actually what Rickson charges.

A guy on DTR got some for $15 EACH (wow). In fact there's a lot of 30 of similar Accuride wheels on ebay for $30 EACH - southwestwheel sells these for $200 EACH. If those were our PN I would gladly buy all of them and redistribute at a fair price :)

Does anyone know where I could send these steel rims to be chromed? Black looks good on some vehicles but I like chrome. I emailed Rickson about it and they never answered.

Thanks

Looks like this is where I am at as of today...

$2682 for a dually conversion with 19. 5's. No spare. Includes tires/mounting/balancing and boring of the wheels.

$1900 for a dually conversion with 16's and a spare.

Who is going to convince me to go with 19. 5's ? :)

16s are lighter, get to have a spare, and will allow me to swap tires to my trailer when they are running low on tread. 19. 5's will be heavier, safer, maybe worse mileage, but will last a long time and of course there is the cool factor :-laf

I intend for this truck to be a heavy hauler.

I also have a set of Rickson's on order. This is my 2nd time around with them (new truck). The Michelin XDE-MS wear pretty well and stop good in the rain. Anybody know how to get black center caps?

Tommy Gun, I like your truck, wish some one had the chrome off of mine! But when you buy as cheap as I did, you can live with it.
