Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Thoughts after 125,000 miles.......

Maybe I should be going down to TJ to get my fuel. any idea how much it costs???? I have not been down there in 10 years, dispite living in San Diego.

Well - I was alot younger with my first truck - yes, I abused it. Badly.



When I bought my second truck (the diesel), when I say babied, I mean that I drive it 60 highway miles per day to and from work, with the cruise set at 60 mph, and anything else is highway as well. less than 1% towing. They way I define it - that's pampered. I'm not racing, towing, hill climbing, jackrabbit starting, hauling anything else other than my 200 lb body and some tools.



I bought it thinking that if everything on it was heavy duty, I should be able to get lots of miles with minimal maintenance, if it were just the injector pump, or just the transmission - maybe I wouldn't be so upset. But when it's a huge list - it's too much for me.



Maybe I just got a lemon? All of the automakers make them sometimes...

Lets see you completely trashed your last pickup out in 75,000 miles and you managed to trash this one out in 125,000 miles and it's the big three's fault?

Looks like a pattern to me, but that would be profiling and that's not PC nowdays.

Daven i am not sure quite what you expect from a vehicle.

The starter and alternator were Denso known worlwide as the most reliable units out there, foriegn or domestic.

The injection pump was bosch also known for quality.

The heater core and air conditioning lines failing immediately following replacement of the evaporator sounds like a case of improper assembly but that is just a hunch.

A set of ball joints every 30,000 miles I think probably comes from your driving description.

What someone who admitidly abused a vehicle and bent the frame jumping it calls babying a vehicle is probably much different than someone who consistently gets long trouble free life from their vehicles.

I have had almost no trouble with my truck. It just rolled 116,000 miles. However, it has never seen snow, but has had regular maintenance. Check my sig for repair details. That part IS up to date! This kind of reliability is why I don't use synthetic oil and a half dfozen miracle products in my fuel. These engines EASILY outlast any truck they reside in. If you have extra money and want to make your truck last longer, spend it on the truck, not the engine.

In the interior of Mexico diesel fuel costs about $2. 09 per gallon... depending on the exchange rate you get. It is EXCELLENT quality!!! I will burn Mexican fuel rather than American fuel when ever I can! It costs a little less along the border with the USA, but I can not give you the exact price. Of course, you buy it by the liter down here and pay for it with Mexican pesos. Not a problem for me after living down here for over 19 years!

Oh yes, it also helps a lot when buying fuel in Mexico if you can speak Spanish!!! If you travel down here, you need special Mexican insurance since most American insurance is not good once you cross the border.

thanks Steve, I can get me a translator . My dads neighbor used to drive to Mexico, 30 years ago to get diesel for his little truck & to get Cigs'

There are lots of trucks that have not had your problems. My fathers 98. 5 24v went 187K miles with him driving it. He replaced the front brakes at 85K, the lift pump at about 90K. He had a new clutch at 150K and a new lift pump and injection pump at 165K. It had almost no rust on it (in AK that is saying something). It ran RV275 injectors and a boost fooler for 100K of that. He tradded it in on an 04. 5 (used) last year and got 13K trade in on it. Oh yeah, it towed a 36 ft fifth wheel about 80% of its life with him.
