The throttle rod on my 1994 broke yesterday. I got a replacement rod from the dealer today and the curved tubular section is 1 3/4 inches longer and will not work. The parts guy said that was the only rod listed for my truck. I double checked this with another dealer and got the same part number -05011959AB. Does the fact that the rod is longer than my old rod mean that my truck missed the throttle cable recall even though the old rod has the metal ends? Or does it mean that I need to replace some of the linkage parts. I am considering cutting a section out of the new rod but something just doesn't make sense here since this is the only rod available from the dealer. I figure someone must have had this problem judging by all of the "broken throttle rod" entries in the 12v forum. I plan to call the dealer tomorrow and check on the recall and get their take on the problem but would really like some experienced input before I talk to them.

Am I doing something wrong in my posts or do I just have really strange problems. I have posted several items but get very few replies. If I an not doing this right, someone please let me know the correct way.

I don't think the throttle cable recall had any thing to do with the throttle rod. I know the throttle rod recall on the 97s didn't include the cable. I've replaced three of the rods on mine over the years and have found that a good piece of wire will work for a long time if need be (Alamagordo to Tucson). It's possible the wrong rod was packed in the plastic bag. I'd take the old rod parts to the second dealer and compare them to the one he has in stock. Yes you have strange problems and no you are not doing anything wrong. You just need to have a little patience.

Thanks Games. Patience is something I am constantly working on. Type A personality but getting old enough where I have to slow down. Just glad I wasn't doing something in my posts that was making members not want to reply.

Go to the dealer with your VIN and check to see which recalls have been done to your truck. If the throttle linkage recall has not been done have them do it. It's a safety recall so it's free.

Here's the latest. The third Dodge dealer I talked to came up with another part number for the rod (4897118AA). It will be here in the morning and I will go check it out. I called Dodge customer service and they did not show anything on the new number and showed that the rod I got (05011959AB) from the second dealer fits a 1989 to 1994. I know my 1994 has a P7100 pump and the 93 and below did not. So that is a problem. Cummings did not have a part that crossed over to the 4897118AA part number either. I guess I will see tommorrow what shows up at the dealer.

Also, using the link below, I found out that my truck has 2 incomplete safety recalls on it. One for the throttle cable and another for the steering shaft. Have an appointment for day after tommorrow to get those done if I get a throttle rod between now and then.

When the rod broke on my '94 I sent the wife to get a new one. When I tried to put it on I had the same problem you have. I called the dealer to discuss the problem and they said the part was superceded and that the new rod is the only one listed. I then called where I got my truck (who didn't have the rod when I first called) and they confirmed the story. They did have a kit with all new linkage in the new style for the P-7100 pump which I bought for $300. It took some tinkering to get adjusted, as all the bellcranks are adjustable along with the rod. I finally got to where I had idle AND full throttle after about four tries. Now I have a spare rod since the kit also came with one. Two days later, the cable broke and I replaced that.

The throttle rod with the different part number at the third dealer was just the curved tubular section of the assembly and it was also too long. Like you said DKing, all of the dealers told me that this was the only throttle rod available. I had seen your post in the 12V forum where you stated that you had to spend $300 to get the new rod to work. Well, being married, with children, and grandchildren, I decided to try to modify the new rod to make it fit. The threaded portion of the new rod has 2 nuts jammed together to act as the adjustment point. I removed one of the nuts and cut just a little over an inch off the threaded end that the ball socket screws onto. Right now, the adjustment is correct but I will have to modify it if it ever needs shortening some more.

I take the truck to the dealer tomorrow to have the throttle cable and steering shaft recalls done and I will check the adjustment after that. Might have modify it some more.

I had the old rod welded back together to keep in the truck as a backup so I won't get stranded again.

Thanks to all that replied to help me with this problem

Craig, I had the old one welded to keep in the truck as a backup. It is the original one that came on the truck, I think, with 1 plastic end and I did not want to trust it to do full time duty. The threaded rod is smaller on it than the new one and not as sturdy looking either. I go tomorrow for the throttle cable recall that hasn't been done on my truck yet.

Glad you got it worked out. I'd venture to say the first Dodge dealer you went to is one to avoid. Reason being, there were two different throttle rods for the VE powered trucks (89-93), based on whether or not it was intercooled- the brackets were different. Not sure why they listed it for a 89-94; a lot doesnt carry over from 93 to 94.
