Finally fixed the tick-tick, it turned out to be the fuel (lift) pump. No obvious damage to the cam follower or cam, the return spring felt the same as the new one. Must have been the internal valves  Anyway, no more tick-tick. We placed a long piece of metal on the LP and the ticking was easy to track down. Hope this helps others. FP was always good FYI.

I take it since this post is in the 12 valve forum it was on the 12 valve. If not disregard everything after this... .

Could the ticking be heard in the cab? Was it only at idle or all the time? Could you only hear it from the drivers side?

Thanks,

Doug

You could hear it @ idle from the drivers seat, most noticable if you layed on the ground under the driver side. Above idle you couldnt hear it. Replacing the overflow valve had no effect. Yes, it's a 98 12V.

Ok I'm new at this so bear with me. Where exactly is the lift pump, directly behind the P7100? What exactly did you change out and is this a major problem or something that doesnt have to be done right away?

Thanks,

Doug

Thanks illflem

I dont have the service manual yet does that have a detailed description of everything in it and should it be bought through Cummins or the Dodge.

I fixed it because I was worried the tick-tick was caused by the lift pump follower slapping the cam instead of staying in constant contact. It turns out to have been (possibly, strictly conjecture here) the valves inside the lift pump. We'll never know but much happier with the tick gone.

I've had the noise on mine pretty much since new.

I'm now thinking I should bring it back to the dealer to see what they say before I reach 100K miles.

I was there when it was new for this sound, and they told me it was normal.
