Received a receall notice yesterday for the left tie rod ball stud, may fracture under certain conditions. Also to check and tighten the track bar bolt.

Looks like tie rod failures are still an issue.

It is to make sure the outer tie rod ends have been installed parellel ,with in 5 degrees of each other.

Yes, I got the recall notice yesterday too. It's going on the list of other warranty work that I already had a dealer appointment for.

If memory serves me, I had this tie rod end replaced under a recall once before. Guess the new one, or the way it was installed, is suspect too.

It was found out that they had a bunch of bad ones. And also the angle of the ball in relation to a hard right turn would put undue stress on the ball stud and cause it to break. This would happen in a slow manuver, never in a high speed type manuver. It would happen when a lot of stress was applied. You can tell about the alignment of the ball. full right turn, look at the ball. If its turned up tight against the arm attached to the wheel, this is where the stress comes in. The proper alignment should be all most parllele, with in a few degrees of level when in this posstion. There is pictures of this on the internet. And it should go back as far as 03, all applications for the recall.

The notice doesn't say if its to replace the tie rod end just that "The left tiew rod ball stud on your truck may fracture under certain driving conditions". I also had the steering linkage recall done last year so I guess I'll find out more when I visit my dealer.

I had the recall performed last Wed. They measure both TRE on the tie rod bar. If both ends are within 5* then you are on your way. If greater then a few hours to change the TRE and toe alignment. Mine was within spec.

When I had mine done, my dealer told me it was a replace and align, not an inspection and replace if necessary.

I found out today when I went to have this done. The recall states if the tie rod angles are not within specs the left tie rod must be replaced. Also for the '03 to certain '08's unless the vehicle was in for service and had the linkage replaced between July 12, 2002 through Feb 13, 2008 they will not perform this recall, even if you have the new style linkage. According to the L16 recall issued to the dealers and a phone call to Chrysler. Although the info on the NHTSA website doesn't explain this.

Mine was checked yesterday by the dealership in Lubbock I don't trust. I decided not to spend the time and fuel to drive a long distance to a good dealership. It was done so quickly I doubt much was inspected other than to determine that yes, I do have a left tie rod installed.

It should take about 2 minutes to check the angles and a few more to

Tighten the track bar

Got the notice letter had it inspected. I've got over 95,000 miles on these parts. I guess I installed them right as they haven't broke nor did they need replacement. All was good as the dealer said. The 08 update kit has held up very well much better than the stuff the truck came with (it's an 05 2500 4x4)... ... Now off to the KEYS!!!! Or should I say KEYS or BUST!!

I have my appointment set for tomorrow morning, lets see if they check it and let me go or just replace it. I'll ask if this is a "Replace the part" recall if they change it. Interesting to see what they say. When making the appointment he mentioned having a few trucks there already for the same recall.

Hello,

does anyone know if linkage part number 52122362AF falls under this recall? I did the 08. 5 steering linkage upgrade about 16 months ago but have not received a recall notice. Not sure if mine is affected, checked under truck today and the drivers side TRE angle was off, I adjusted it back to parallel and hope there are no issues. Thanks

Dealer inspected mine, said it was within spec and the TRE was fine. Tightened the track bar and I was done in 20 minutes.

fritzimax,
My recall notice mentions specifically the steering linkage that was replaced with mopar service parts. I don't know the part numbers since I don't have the work order from the steering recall in front of me. I would think that you would be a part of the recall. From what I understand, if you look at the stud under the boot you will see damage from rubbing against the TRE body. I assume that damage is why the studs are breaking.

From the recall notice.

"The right and left tie rod angles must be measured. If the tie rod angles are not within specification, the left tie rod must be replaced.

Also, the front track bar mounting bolt must be tightened to the proper torque specification on all affected vehicles. "

In addition to the trucks with the new style linkage, trucks with replacement linkage are also included. Again from the recall notice.

"2003 – 2004 (DR) Ram Truck 2500/3500 (4x4)

2006 – 2008 (DH) Ram Truck 1500 Mega Cab (4x4)

2006 – 2008 (D1) Ram Truck 3500 (4x4)

2007 – 2008 (DC) Ram Truck Cab Chassis

2005 – 2008 (DH) Ram Truck 2500 (4x4)

2005 (DH) Ram Truck 3500 (4x4)

NOTE: This recall applies only to the above vehicles that were in for service and had the steering linkage replaced with Mopar service parts between July 12, 2002 through February 13, 2008 (MDH 071206 through 021323). "

Ditto ? I just got my upgrade package from Moparparts w/heavy duty Bilstein shocks & dampener. Already installed the BD links. Am I good to go after the install of the upgrade or is there yet more BS I need to do to my lemon ?

If you purchased it after Feb 2008 you should be OK. Chrysler does not know who purchased replacement parts, so they just mail letters to everyone they have records for.
