Time required to change lift pump

For those who have replaced the lift pump.



How long did it take you to do it? (the first time, as I'm sure the time is shorter the second time)



I'm leaving on a trip Saturday and am wondering if I have the time to replace the lift pump. I've got a new one plus the pigtail so will carry it as a backup if I can't get the swap done before leaving.



Any special tools needed, or just carry as complete a tool set as you can?

I didn't acctually change mine myself,but I watched the tech at the dealer change it, 'onacounta warranty. Took him about 1/2 hour, with basic tools,even with me askin' him all kinds of questions.

Also, he did it from the top side,not from under the truck.

When I had mine changed out, it was in and out within 45 mins. while I waited.

It takes about 15-20 minutes! Me on the other hand... . :{ :{

I just helped do one the other day... probably took an hour. We did not time it, we just did it. We also went in from the top by removing the filter housing and reaching down.

lift pump change

iron trader i have changed 2 pumps first one about 45 mins. second one 30 mins. both done from the top . this on a 98. 5 . removed fuel filter bottom half , remove the 2 banjo bolts , watch you dont loose the 4 seal washers , they can be reused if you dont damage them . next remove the 3 nuts on the top . disconnect the plug. that should be it . install in reverse order. hope this helps.

Took me about 45 minutes on my 2001 from the topside also. Much easier if you remove filter mounting and push aside.

Time

Less than an hour. Went from underneath and pulled the starter. The top bolt on the starter was a b!tch :{ until I barrowed a 3ft ratchet extension

Changed mine on Tuesday morning. The first one I have done. 44 minutes from opening the hood, getting the tools, to finish. Did not remove the filter and could only get one hand on it. I did turn the turbo hose clamps so they didn't cut me too much. I autopsied the old one. The plastic bushing fell out in 2 pieces.

The easiest way to change the lift pump is to just lay on the engine and drape your arms down. The first time took me about 30min... now it's own to 15min.

I think you mean, "Arm" as in singular not plural . Did you have to disconnect the fuel filter?

Yup, you're right, just one arm. No, you don't need to unbolt the fuel filter... just remove the 2 banjos, then the 3 nuts for the pump. No laying on your back, and no fuel spilling on yourself!
