Time To Wax Before Winter

Ok,



I am needing to do my pre-winter wax and I need to know what kind of wax to use. That Mothers 3 step wax is a pain in the rear to apply and time consuming. I tried the BlackMagic wax and it is CRAP--it will not dry and it leaves an oily film behind that takes several washings to get rid of.



What wax does everybody use?



I also had some overspray on the truck but after taking it off with some Acrysol, I now have some very light scratches from the cloth.



So what is the best way to eliminate the very light surface scratches?



I will be wiping the truck down with the clay bar before waxing. So any help ya'll can provide will be great, as I have some time off right now and need to complete this job ASAP.

I like the clay bar as well. It is surprising what kind of stuff it pulls off the paint.



For easy to use, I choose the Meguiars NXT tech wax. It comes off super easy and doesn't leave oily stuff or dust. It does a fair job of hiding small scratches.



Also, I usually do Zaino products on my truck once a year. This stuff is the ultimate for shine and durability, but it takes several steps to get it done and its pricey. A couple of coats each of Z-5 and Z-2, followed by Z-6 and Z-8 make an unbelievable shine.



A pass with a buffer and some super fine compound should get rid of most of your scratches after you are done with the clay. Minzerna makes some gentle but effective polish products, but they are also somewhat expensive.

I use that stuff in the orange bottle. I think its called nucar finish or something like that. I use it twice a year weather it needs it or not.

I will second the Zaino products. Lasts long enough that I only wax once a year and use the Z6 Ultra clean gloss enhancer in between.

whatever you use, stay away from the Turtle Wax ICE. I just used it and was unhappy with the resulte. Easy to put on, but I am not sure if it gave it any protection. Also, the liquid never dried and I just wiped it off after giving it a hour to dry.

I've been using Blue Corals cleaner wax, everything on one step, an '03 QC dually just has too much surface area!!!!

I've tried a lot of stuff, and am currently working on a bottle of Meguires NXT. After 10 years of owning vehicles I've come to the conclusion that I STINK AT WAXING! No matter what I use, the results are always "mediocre". Furthermore, the results I get are the same regardless of the product (I've not tried Zaino).



Lately, I'll just slather the wax on, let it dry, then lightly wipe it off, frequently leaving a big waxy residue on the vehicle. I do this just about this time of year, before winter sets in. My purpose is not so much to make the truck look good, but to offer maximum protection from the salt.



I honestly don't care how much shine I get. If there was a product out there that made the paint look flat but offered extreme durability and protection from salt, I'd use it. I've even considered (albeit very briefly) applying wax and not wiping it off.

It was late at night and I was tired. I just hope it does some good. We'll see. Please keep posting recommendations.

Thanks for the information.



I looked at the Zaino stuff (www.zainostore.com) and it looks very good. I may have to try it. Their website said to use Dawn hand dishwashing soap to clean off the old wax residue prior to waxing this time. So, keep the information coming.

The Meguiars NXT Tech wax is pretty hard to beat. Its not a wax that is hard to put on or rub out. Its a fair cleaner also. The important thing for all wax's is do not apply in the sun.

I have been using Meguiars #26 plus the clay bar. So far it's done a great job. The locomotives at work are notorious for spewing oil outta the exhaust and the #26 has kept it from sticking, just washes off. Turtle wax never protected like that plus the #26 is almost all Carnuba oil which from what I have read is great for paint especially clearcoats.
