I want to bump up the timing on my brother's truck (93), I was going to use the 1/8 method. Im just curious what the correct way to adjust it is? I know I need to use a dial indicator to figure out the plunger lift at TDC, so do I need a timing kit for this truck? Also I know about the 3 pump bolts, but are there any others I should loosen to help me out?

Thanks

im about to do the same to my truck... its suggested to loosen the injector lines at the pump. im curious about a few of your questions myself.

If you are going to just bump the 1/8th, you don't need the timing tool. If you want to know where it is, or set it specifically, you need it.

You are going to need a special wrench or bend 1 for the bottom pump bolt on the inside. You can use a crows foot also, I heard they work good.

Well for now I wanted to do the 1/8 and then check/ readjust the timing with the dial indicator. So what would I need and exactly how do I need to do it?

Btw I have that factory manual for this truck.

Make a set of marks on the pump and the adjacent bracket on the engine where it mounts with a small chisel or center punch.

Move the pump until the marks are (approximatley) 1/8 inch apart.

Once you are happy with the new pump position you could make a second mark on the pump.

Am I nuts? I read this all over where people put a mark where the pump is now. I have a factory tick mark on my gear case along with one on the pump near the top driver's side bolt. I can use this particular mark to do my 1/8" advance, right?

Thats what I did. Maybe a picture will help you guys out a little. Note, I did not measure this, so I don't know exactly how far my pump is bumped.

Factory marks...

Hope that helps you guys visualize this a little better.

thanks pete ;)

yea that is a really good picture. thanks Chris. and welcome to the nut house :-laf

could you by accident advance the timing too much? what harm would that do?

also, ive been wondering, what are the main benifits of the advance?

Jimmy, I haven't seen 1 leak yet. Resilient gaskets! ;)

Hi Chris! Welcome to the TDR! Oo.

Hey PT, this is nooblet from all the other sites. I couldn't get that name here for some reason :(

Mine doesn't leak at all.

When people bump the timing up more they do it with the gear I believe.

Chris

I believe the main benefits of advancing the timing is for the guys running bigger injectors. I have been told that timing really helps when dumping in more fuel because it gives the fuel more time to burn, but also the injectors may have a higher pop-off pressure which acts like retarded timing.

It possibly helps with fuel economy and less smoke, there are prob a few other reasons.

Yea it should, Its supposed to give you a bit better power, better economy and run somewhat better. There are prob a couple of more benefits.
