Timing Cover Crack

On a 95 model a friend has, the timing cover has a crack that appears to be formed from the inside out and is leaking a ton of oil, anyone got any idea what could have caused this?

It could very likely have been caused by the locating pin leaving it's lightly pressed fit hole, jamming between the gear and case, and cracking the case. (From the inside)

Bummer. Been there, done that. The only good thing about it for me was that it was covered by the warranty. It might be a real long shot, ok it is a real long shot, but you might ask your friendly neighborhood dodge dealer if they would consider doing the repair under a customer satisfaction type deal. Maybe they will cost share with your buddy on a 50/50 type deal. Also try calling the Dodge customer service number, I don't have it handy but I have used them before on one occasion when a dealership was giving me some grief and they made it right while I was on the phone with them. It could happen, maybe. This type of failure is a known defect and it has happened many times to others. If they won't cover it, have your buddy save his receipts, maybe someday dodge or cummins will make it right...

Don't let the shops screw you. I have replaced two gear cases on two different trucks (one of them being the truck listed in the link above). The parts cost around $240 from cummins, that includes; gear case ($170), front main (about $30) and the rest of the cost is in gaskets for the case. I have heard of people paying as much as $3000 for this to be fixed. I would guess an average shop estimate to be around $1500. That will give you an idea of how much money they are stealing from your wallet. Unless there is major damage to the gears (which I have never seen), the items listed above will be all that is needed (other than a few specialty tools that can be made at home).
