Tire Chains

This is my first ever 4X4. 2500 Diesel. I was told that there are good, better and best quality tire chains. I would like recommendations on the best and outlet for same. Also are they needed on all four wheels or just the front?

What size tires? I have true chains and my first DC I put them on the front. My chevy had 35" tires and they wouldn't fit on the front due to hitting the fenders when turning. My new DC I haven't tried but I'm going to start on the front and if they hit I'll put them on the rear. I put them on the front because of the weight from the engine and the control I get. Four wheel chains would be great but I'm to cheap and to lazy to put all four on. I don't think cables last that long on such a heavy vehicle. Make sure what ever you get that you try them on before you are in the middle of the storm. Hope this helps.

When I was price checking, they weren't the cheapest, but when I researched deeper they had better quality stuff. Once I compared to others of equal quality, I felt like they were competitive, and they got my business.

This post reminded me of something I thought of on my way across the mtns. recently. About 6 mos. to a yr. ago, someone posted a website and pic of some type of hard rubber mat that had "grooves" where you could lay your chains in, drive over them and tighten. Does anyone remember the brand or site? Thanks

You can use a 2x4 block under the tire instead of a fancy mat. just put the block in one of the squares in the chains and drive the tire onto the block. It gives you alot of extra movement when trying to get the chains hooked up. Hope this helps.

Thanks all for the Information. The answer to the question regarding the tire size. They are the standard 265 16" Michelins regular highway thread.

John C, hi speed I would put cable chains on the back. That way if you have to stop quickly they will keep you from spining. Slow driving in deep snow I would put heavy chains on the front and they will pull you through any thing. There is a lot of things to take into account when driving in the snow. If you need more info let me know.
