The other diesel pickemup conceit is that the exhaust brake will haul things down unaided by service brake. Not if the trailer is without automatic brake actuation while EB in play. Show us the trailer brake control which does (I sincerely hope this has been changed). This sets up a genuinely bad problem of instability. Big trucks and pickups with heavy loads lose it on the downslope. Think of highway exits the same way. Ease along.

This part of @slomover's post is especially important. I have hauled a fully loaded max 10K GTW equipment trailer behind a fully loaded six speed 3rd gen CTD 3500 with an exhaust brake. Descending into the Salt River Canyon, or either side of Donner Summit are good examples. I use (used, actually since I'm retired from that job) the transmission and exhaust brake to set a general descent rate. The dash mounted brake actuator was set a little tight. From time to time, I'd tap the brakes to slow the rig or apply the trailer's brakes to produce a little drag. Never in a hurry, and usually 10 mph under the limit, always keeping the brakes cool. The exhaust brake was separate from the service brakes, of course.
