I asked this question on the 5.9L forum so thought I would like to hear what the 2016 & 17 owners think. I'm looking at 2 Rams #1 a 3500 SLT Big Horn & 2 is a 3500 Laramie. Both are SRW & have 3.42 axle ratio, 1 has an Aisin the other 68RFE. Future 34' 5th wheel in mind. My current Ram is a an 07 3500 DRW 5.9L & it is just over 40K total Miles.

The newer ones have a lot of stuff on them but on the other hand the money not spent on a new one could be used to add many things to the current Ram and have probably quite a bit left over. How do you current owners of the newer 2017 or 16 Rams like them compared to the 07 if you owned one. I have no or very little pollution equipment. One other factor is I will be 74 in Oct if that makes any contribution to the choice. Any ideas or thoughts.

My 3rd gen was the very best of all the Dodge Cummins I owned since 94, and in my mind was irreplaceable. You know what? I replaced it and have ZERO regrets about it.

If you want and can afford it..... Go get you some new Ram. You'll thanks us later.

I had an 04.5 that was great. My neighbor wanted it so I traded for his new 2012 Longhorn( he's big and couldn't fit comfortably). Traded the 2012 for a 2015 Bighorn w/ Aisin when FCA had the buyback program going on my 2012. Bottom line--while I loved m y 04.5, the new ones have features and improvements that I never miss the 04.5. With what you'll be towing, either transmission would be fine, but personally I'd go with the Aisin.

I bought a 2016 Ram Long Horn, long bed, SRW, Aisin in March 2016 and really like it. But, I continue to drive my 96 2500 diesel auto everyday. Something about those 12 valves.

It's not a typo, it is a little over 40K. When I bought it in 09 it only had 18K, smelled new according to my wife.

The book of life gets changed often, you just deal with it as many of you know, most often it is your or her parents that need the care so you do what needs to be done. So now we are ready to travel so the thought of a new truck, mine is in perfect shape but I thought of a new one with all the Bells & whistles.

I had thought that we would also use this as a primary vehicle when we are home, how well does it work for short trips to town, Dr etc, I have read it needs to be out on the road.

Does this use a Regen
system like the Blu Tec the 2009 had?

If you are going to travel alot, the new trucks are comfy! And you can probably get a nice penny if you want to sell the 5.9

The 2013 + Ram DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) so the regen problems the earlier trucks had are a thing of the past. They will still regen when necessary, but the process is much more user friendly.

We have a 2015 3500 SRW CC SB 4X4 Laramie with Aisin transmission and love it. We have put 31K on it is 22 months. It has been from Colorado to Washington in the first 48 hours, and to Arizona and back twice from Washington. Once towing a Bighorn 3575el at 16k and 39'4", and once with a box trailer. The Aisin makes the 3.42 gears work with the lower 1st and 2nd gears. 80MPH is 1750 RPM in 6th and we tow at 60MPH in 5th at 1750 RPM. 80MPH is Sunday drive in this rig.

So all winter in Arizona this was our only vehicle as a daily driver. I have to but in on cruise control or I find myself speeding without knowing it.

Go for the one with the Aisin!

how much longer do you think you';ll be driving, and towing? if you have the spare cash flow, then by all means spend it, you have but one chance at life. make it what you want of it. and you can't take it with you.
Enjoy.

Oddly enough the Laramie doesn't have the Aisin, the SLT Big Horn does & it does have a lot of options, you wouldn't have leather seats but not sure if that is a big downside. The 07 SLT Big horn I have now has the Prem Cloth but they are not as comfortable as my 03 with the Prem cloth, those seats were nice & soft whereas the 07 is a bit stiffer seat. I have sat in the '17 Big Horn & the seats seem more comfortable so that might be an option.

What kind of mileage do you get with your truck & the 3.42 gearing. Both the Laramie & the SLT have the same rear end just not the same transmission.
