I tow a trailer with 2 12K axles and have no problems with our 3500 duallys... . we have power hyd disc brakes on the trailer... . we never go enough brakes with electrics to feel safe and than even with the disc brakes there is a short pause before they kick in..... in traffic there is what I call the pucker factor... when someone pulls into the open space in front of the truck... they are all gooseneck hitches rated at 30K lbs and the hitch in the bed of our trucks are bent up..... from the weight... .
We have air bags on the trucks to level them... and its slow going up hills...
We have CDL's and I'm guessing that if state police officer attached to the commercial division of your state sees you he'll ticket you for not having a CDL..... he would here in WA... . unless you have Farm Plates... at least that is the way it is here..... we drive in 6 western states and we've been stopped in at least each state 3 or 4 times a year checking on us... .
Now let me say if I was going say 100 miles, on a Sunday I'd do it... . no matter what ..... however on the other 6 days, and over 100 miles I do it knowing that he can ground you..... and fine you if you want... . even if later your in the right and it was an unjust ticket... look at the hassle... ...
One last thought... you can own it and not need a CDL If you don't make money with it..... hauling your personal household stuff, your travel trailer, etc... . but equipment is used to make money hence its commercial the way I see it... . after all, what are you going to do with it when you get where your going..... dig a ditch for a buddy... .
These are just my thoughts..... my 2 cents worth so to speak...
