Mine is a 95 club cab with 172000 easy miles, does not use any oil. How ever lately when I change the oil and add 12qts of oil, it is 1 qt high on the dipp stick, after running it to check for leaks. The crank case takes 10 qts the oil filter takes 1qt it is the fleetgaurd 16065 and the Franz by pass filter take 1qt also, for a total of 12 qts. But when checking the level when cold the level is one quart high. SO is this something I need to be concerned about, or just fill it with enough oil to the full line from here on? This is strange, cause it didnt use to be this way, So I'm wondering if a filter is draining back, of which should not be.

When ever I change the oil I do a change of the filters. And clean out all the left overs when changing. when this is all done I have rigged a no start on the engine and can prime the filters by just turning the engine over as needed so no dry start with empty filters.

Its bin doing this the last two times of changing the oil. never before. Could it be that the new filters are being built with out the drain back feature? these filters are bought from Genos. All my filters are bought from there. Except the Franz, They are bought from the Franz people. and there is no drain back feature just tt paper. When I change that one its down a couple cups in the can.

Does it smell like fuel? If you drop some on a white paper towel see if any diesel separates out from the oil in a expanding ring.

I find these engines are difficult to check the oil level on. You have to check the oil 15 min after shutdown. Hot oil in 3 gal of oil makes one quart from expansion Vs. cold oil. Then the filter drains back over time.

Before the first start of the day is a good time to check the oil. After fueling up should give similar results on a hot engine as the oil is hot +1qt, but, the filters haven't drained back -1 qt.

As long as you check the oil the same way adjust the level to read full.

If either the Fleetguard LF16065 or the Franz bypass filter is retaining oil when it didn’t previously, this could cause the crankcase to read higher after filling. Filters generally have anti-drainback valves, but if they start to fail, it could alter the oil level after sitting for a while. You might try switching to a fresh filter to see if this affects the reading.

The oil filters on these trucks don’t use anti-drainback valves.

The oil filter retaining oil would cause the reading on the dipstick to be lower.

It’s normal for the filters in these trucks to drain back to ~2/3 full after sitting for a bit.
